Best AV and Firewall

rruwalton

ISP Rep
I have been using Bitdefender v8 over the last several months. All was well until a few weeks ago when I noticed it was closing itself due to an error. After uninstalling & reinstalling Bitdefender, the problem still persists

I would appreciate comments/ reviews on the best combined AV & Firewall combined or individual software programs at present.

Although we have discussed this topic before I thought it wiser to start a new thread rather than tag onto an old one.

I look forward to your feedback & comments.

Thanks

:)

i suggest Mac Os :)

Avast antivirus has been working for me for the last 18 months with no problems, you can get a free one or buy the product.

Firewall i use is Sygate, again no problems after 18 months.

Highly recomend both of them.

Thanks for the feedback guys :)

I trialed Nod32 and Avast and thought they were very good but with the combined Firewall I tried Bitdefender and it did work well. Looks like I have a conflict between it and another program.

Onephat, I have no idea what you mean "Mac 0s"

He means buy an apple mac either Imac, the G4 or the latest G5. A MAC! or even the MiniMac lol

That's akin to buying a Rover!

Sacrilege ! I take it you've never visited an Apple forum ? Brave words indeed.

On another topic ... out of AVG and Avast, I'd take Avast - it finds and removes many items AVG just misses. As I've said before Avast is rather slow (read _much_ slower) at full disk scans compared to AVG. :)

I use Zone Alarm Pro and AVG without problem. Zone Alarm do a combined AV and firewall but I haven't tried it.

:)

For me it has to be looknstop firewall, excellent firewall with very low system resource usage.
Currently using Mcafee for AV protection, another excellent product with great detection, although if i had a more modern system i would most likely use Kaspersky as it did tend to slow my system down quite considerably when i trialled it.

If you visit this here... http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/antivirus/default.mspx
You should have plenty of options to keep you going free for about three and a half years :)

Another option is here... http://start.shaw.ca/start/enca/Customer+Service+Centre/shawsecure.htm

This is F-Secure 2005 Pro (rebranded) for free for up to 3 computers, and F-Secure AntiSpyware (Adaware Pro Rebranded) for free for up to 3 computers.

It contains these features..
Virus Protection Stops viruses, worms, and Trojans from infecting your computer through email, web browsing, or infected floppy disks and CDs.

Internet Shield (Firewall) The robust personal firewall keeps hackers and worms out of your computer.

Parental Control Use the parental control features to protect children from inappropriate Internet content.

Automatic Updates Shaw Secure downloads updates automatically, keeping your computer safe from the latest threats.

Spam Control Shaw Secure’s highly accurate spam control feature filters all inbound email messages and moves spam to a separate folder.

Spyware and Pop-Up Blocking You can also enhance Shaw Secure with add-on features such as anti-spyware and pop-up blocking.

I have to say after using AVG, Mcaffee, Norton and Avast i have to say that so far the best one i have found is Panda.

Panda Titanium is a good AV program and found everything on a system i had to clean up after a viruses nightmare. They were using norton and hadnt stopped the viruses at all.
Panda release updates daily or even more often at times so is always upto date.

I use Panda Platinum which has a firewall in it as well, although i still trust zonealarm as my main firewall for over 3 years.

Panda Titanium costs around £25 upwards but if you go on ebay you can get it for around £7.00 as an OEM product. Platinum is about £10 on ebay.

Make sure you get the latest 2005 version though as the 2004 version and older was not as good.

You can download a free 30 day trial, which is good to get rid of those viruses and see if you like the software, goto www.pandasoftware.com and click try on the product you want. The only thing with the trial is you can only update the virus database once.

If you do use the trial then buy an OEM copy then just use the user name and password from the registration and put it in your trial copy as this will be a newer version than the cd.

Apple! They still in business ;)

Thanks Bob :)

Yeh the amount i'm spending in the Apple Store there set up for years :)

I use Kaspersky and I'm very happy with it so far ( 3 years ). I learnt that running the AV monitor on its own it does't slow down your PC very much at all.

I used to run Sygate firewall but now I'm behind a router / firewall. I really need to research if I do need a software firewall too.

I know that Norton AV is easy to use and has a nice interface but as AV is poor.

RRU, it's possible that you have a backdore in your PC and when installing itself it made changes to your registry so that : it disables your AV and you cannot reinstall it properly again. If that is the case you need to either use another AV to find it or if you know what you're doing, edit the registry to fix the problem. As a last result, reformat your HD and start fresch

Thanks salvador. Good to see you on the forums again :)

I have tried the latest Zone Alarm Internet Security but its not to my liking.

RRU, I have never used Zone Alarm so I cannot comment. I hope you find something that you like and it protects your PC too.

You only get what you pay for with FREE Av and firewalls. I wish it was free but also as good as they paid ones.

HI i use zone alarm pro i have ran couple internet scans and port scan programs it seams 100% i also use kaspersky anti virus seams very good also good write up in computer mags :D
