Best ISP for UMA

Hi all,

I am currently with Sky at the moment but have problems using my UMA enabled Blackberry which I heavily rely on for work.

Current router is the ubiquitous Sagem which may not help, have ordered a Linksys 'Hotspot' router which is pre-set up for UMA phones so will see how that goes.

My speed is sub 2mbs, typically 1.6-8 mb/s

I was thinking maybe Orange as they supply my cell phone but so far their tech dept cannot confirm if this would help.

Any help appreciated,

David

Just to add to my post above, on doing a post code check it revels that I can get:-

Standard broadband
Up to 8Mb (estimated speed: 2Mb)
High speed broadband
Up to 24Mb (estimated speed: 2M
b)

I guess the high speed is ADSL 2+ - do you have to ask for this or is automatic once selecting the package?

Also this from Top10.com

Distance from your exchange
1.9miles

Average speed of other users from this exchange
3.5Mb

Fastest provider on this exchange
Be

This could be a problem. I am not hugely familiar with Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) or Blackberry devices, but without checking further I did think that Orange were the only ones who fully supported it.. unless your phone is from somebody else in which case they don't seem to give a **** :) .

I hear that some BT routers for their Business Broadband packages also support this feature. Neither ISP are particularly good.

Thanks Mark,

Received my 'Hotspot' modem this morning, plugged it in and the adaptor went up in smoke, literally - tripped the house breaker circuit too, not impressed

Do you think it's worth changing ISP (from Sky to Be) even though both use the same exchange?

The top ten site recomended Be with the info below;

Distance from your exchange
1.9miles
Average speed of other users from this exchange
3.5Mb
Fastest provider on this exchange
Be

BE are a very good ISP if you can get them and want a good balance of quality and price, although I don't know how well they would play with UMA.

No idea how a router could possibly cause the house breaker circuit to be tripped, my guess would be an adapter fault as the router itself will only use a couple of Watts.

Depends what you mean by "modem"? Most modern consumer routers build ADSL/ADSL2+ modem functionality in with the package as standard, that is common.

The wrtu54g-tm doesn't have a built in adsl modem according to this :- http://www.modem-help.co.uk/Linksys...P-T-Mobile-Wi-Fi-Broadband-Router.html?info=1

The ‘TM’ stands for “T-Mobile” - a SIM card(s) can be inserted (into the base of) the router; VoIP calls are via T-Mobile’s network. Note that the WRTU54G-TM requires an additional cable/DSL modem to be able to make internet connections.

I have no idea what UMA is, so I thought I'd look it up, and it appears that it uses ports 500 and 4500 for incoming connections, which therefor have to be port forwarded to the Blackberry. So I would have thought most routers would be capable of this. However you do see a lot of complaints about the wireless range of the current Sky black routers.

Someone seems to have it working on a Sky sagem here, although not without problems - http://www.talk3g.co.uk/showthread....MA-will-not-work-with-BT-on&p=38460#post38460

Thanks for the links Mel,

Oddly enough after moving my laptop the UMA connection seems a lot better, 25 min phone call today with no jitters

How about this router/modem which has POS allowing partitioning of bandwidth especially for VOIP apps?

Progress (I think) :-)

After getting more dropped UMA calls got onto BT for fault testing.

Between BT & Sky tech there is nothing wrong with either the line or the exchange, ie. no work that they aware of being carried out.

The reason the phone fades in and out of UMA service is purely down to the unstable bandwidth during the day which varies considerably, at it's lowest point down to .20 mb/s download & .10 upload or thereabouts.

My house is the last one before open countryside and therefore at the end of the line with many other houses/connections preceding it, my thoughts are school holidays lots of use during the day?

The question around rain being a problem well this could be connected not to the rain itself but children staying indoors playing online games ect?

Would say a BE line (uncontested/shared) or other make any difference or would this be pointless?

Last question about connectivity, is there a large fibre pipe to say the housing estate which is then split into individual house connections or are connections direct to the exchange (highly unlikely I know)

Thanks,
