Best new routers that can handle long line

Hi there.

Looking to switch isp in coming weeks but it'll be one where i need to use my own router.

Im approx 4100m away from exchange but running FTTC 80/20 via local cabinet atm so is buying a router for long line now really necessary?

Any recommendations welcome.

Many thanks.

I am not 100% sure a modem will make much difference honestly but others may know better. For me, I just used a cheap VDSL modem and the quality wasn't hugely different from ISP provided ones.

Distance to the exchange is irrelevant unless you are on ADSL, if you are on FTTC it’s the line length from the cabinet you need to consider.

Thank you. Im not sure what it is to the cabinet but i know its not that far. Id say a 3 minute walk absolute tops.
What would be a good modem/router to buy?

If you are not having other connectivity problems, such as poor WiFi, or protocol implementation then getting your own equipment is unlikely to change anything. Unfortunately, some of us just don't get great download speeds!

I have to disagree. Stock routers aren't in my experience the best as they are budget basic routers.

OP just use the router from your previous ISP if you're remaining on the OpenReach network?

Don't ISPs lock routers so they don't work with other services?

Other ISP's? I don't know back in the day I had an ISP router that worked with another, so maybe take back my comment if they have locked them. It's a practice that needs removing just like locking your phone in with the phone providers network.

However, I'd always prefer to purchase my own. Where possible

I think it depends what router your ISP gave you. If it is a cheap crappy unbranded technicolour one or an unbranded ZyXel one then probably (Most of the new ISPs give you these). If it is one that has been specifically made for the ISP such as BTs Home/Smart Hubs or Talktalks WiFI hub then probably not (It's not just limited to there two)

Interesting question and sorry to hijack; I am also FTTC, but in my case I'm apparently 1.4Km away from the cabinet. So slight variation to the OPs original question, are there any modems/routers which are better than others when handling long distances from cabinet to property?
