Bill reminder for closed account

I recently received a bill reminder (I.e. your bill is now ready - login to your account to view etc) from a (major) broadband provider I left in late 2013. All bills were paid. The email seems to be legitimate, it contains my correct username, and all the links are correct.

I have contacted the provider, who assure me there is no bill to pay and the account is closed. They say 'as our systems are continuously improved, it seems an automated email was generated based on a closed account". They state they have now deleted my email to prevent recurrence.

I was just a bit concerned that this came out of the blue after over 2 years of leaving. Do you folks think the explanation they have given me plausible, or should I worry that my data has been compromised or that they have a record of debt somewhere? It's the fact that it has come so long after I left that concerns me, and I am not sure if they have actually investigated this or are fobbing me off.

Given that it contains real verifiable data about you and the explanation I think it plausible, yes.

You can look at the full email headers to trace where the message actually came from. In Outlook 2013, for instance, open the email then the File tab, then Properties, scroll down through the text that you see, and near the bottom you'll see the IP address of the sending mail server.

If you then open "Command Prompt" (again assuming Windows) and type in tracert (space) IP address and press return, you'll be able to see the route it took.
