Brand new ISP - Chiswick, London ?

Hello,

Interesting forum - new member, regards to all.

Can anyone confirm I'm doing the right thing ? I'm moving to Chiswick - W4 1BN and was going to go for Virgin based on the fact they have fibre and a reputation (elsewhere) for having the fastest broadband. Having read some of this forum this would seem not to be the case and if I am happy to pay slightly more would definitely be better off speed wise (and for service) looking at some of the top rated suppliers on this site FidoNet, Fibreoptic, AAISP, XILO, Fast.co.uk. which is what I have started doing. Is this the way to go or does someone have a recommendation for Chiswick ?

Can I get 2-3 routers and direct broadband connections in different rooms (rather than use wireless) from one account or do I have to network the routers ?

Thanks for any help.

T.

having looked at some addresses on that postcode, speeds of up to 80mbps down 20mbps up on BT's FTTC service. Virgin Media currently offers an up to 152 down and 12 up package, so would be faster in the download direction at least. BT's network suffers from crossover in the cables and Virgin Media seems to have quite high congestion at times. So it's kinda swings and roundabouts, but I would go for Virgin Media.

BT also offers FTTPoD, which would get you the highest speeds: 330mbps down and 30mbps up, although it might be for a more business price rather than a consumer one.

You can have multiple routers providing 'direct' (by which I think you mean wired LAN) in different rooms, but you would need to lay CAT cable or use powerline adaptors.

Experiences will vary from location to location. Cable operator Virgin Media tends to deliver the best speeds for big providers, although you might find that FTTC supporting hybrid-fibre ISPs like Sky, PlusNet, Zen etc. can do some decent speeds too (but you'd need to check with your chosen ISPs website first to see what the estimate is for your phone line as it could be good or poor).

As ever it also depends upon how much you're willing to pay and what kind of service you're looking for.

Welcome to Chiswick. Just round the corner from me. I get 75Mb down with Zen FTTC with the box just next to my block. But there is another box at the bottom of your new road.

Thanks for the great replies.

Pedrostech - so you're recommending Virgin Media over AAISP, XILO etc. O.K. thanks.

Mark.J. - in a sense you're also recommending Virgin based on speed but also advising to check out other providers.

PeeJay - thanks & looking forward to living in Chiswick. Will any provider be able to use the box at the end of my road ? Do you recommend Zen FTTC ?

Regards

tboneup-I'm recommending Virgin Media over the twisted pair providers (ADSL/VDSL (FTTC))for download speed. If you want good customer support, undoubtedly, AAISP, Zen etc seem the best.

Certainly, if you do a lot of uploading, a FTTC solution would be best, leading to Zen/AAISP FTTC being the best.

If the box at the end of the road is small, about 2ft high, then it's probably Virgin Media. If it's big and green and has vents, it's a BT DSLAM for Fibre, in which case you most likely would be connected to it, should you opt for an FTTC package.

Pedrostech - thanks for the reply and recommendation, I'll have a look at the box before making my choice.

If looking at VM you really need tot alk to those near you already on VM since if they over subscribe on their network this will take them months to upgrade. I gave up on my areas upgrade after 6 months of dates being put back and moved to ADSL.

Each area of VM can be different the more populated the area the bigger chance for them to over subscribe, remember TV and internet share the same cable.

It's a big green box and has a BT Openreach sticker on it.

@Tboneup - heartily recommend Zen. Never had a problem with their service.
