Breathe Companies and renaming etc

Just tyrying to summarise some of the info that's been bandied about concerning the Breathe companies which appear, disapper, reappear under a different name etc.

I make no comment about the people in charge since their actions speak for themselves. See also numerous comments from angry (ex) users of any of a growing list of (ex) ISPs.

=============

Edit: Just to clarify, only covering 2003 onwards, when the current lot started taking over.

Various Companies House rummages.
Company number is the key to most of this because the names keep changing.
Company name next to number is the current or last-known name.
Anyone intending to use the information is advised to verify before acting,
check later posts in this thread and/or add corrections as found please!

Thanks for that :)

For starters, some of the ISPs taken by Breathe

From breatheinternet.com/about_breathe
- Bush Internet
- MacUnlimited
- Blue Carrots
- Gio Internet
- Netcom
But that's quite an old list and incomplete even at the time it was written.

Also
- Zetnet
- Fast4
- V21/Biscit (partial?)

And more, breathe gets mentioned in several ISP sections on this forum, frequently with what might be described as 'uncharitable descriptions'...

You are forgetting all those VIP brands, was it all of them or did some escape?

And Intensive Networks, intensive.net done by the same people but lives on a different network. Half the contacts on that network's RIPE registration are invalid email addresses (netacquisitions.co.uk non-existant), very appropriate. Lists as "Net Access Ltd mailservers". Net Access is on your "interesting" list or just "honourable mention"?

There must be more! Was there an argument with Plusnet about broadband customers? A search came up with http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/1087-plusnet-to-the-rescue-of-affinity-customers.html

Is it my imagination or have a load of the breathe domain registrations changed? A check on a few of them just now has some of the records listed as changed yesterday 21/7/09. Any clues as to what changed? Maybe the registrant info, name still says Marcus but contact email says Nick P. If someone has an old list available, can they compare?
Not all of them have been changed so either something interesting is under way (never good news for breathe users) or it's just a tidying-up exercise and there's just so many domains that it's going to take a while.

Is there to be some news about financial viability and a problematic migration?
Could it all be saved by an absolutely not connected in any way other company which comes riding to the rescue?
Will someone be able to buy up or rent the hardware, user base etc etc leaving the original company with all the debts but nonetheless grateful for any payment that someone might give?
Did I miss this happening or am I early with my prophecies of doom?

Here is the old info I found, any use? More changing of names stinks to high heaven of a cowboy outfit in it for the money and what they can squeeze out before someone shuts them down. It is unlikely to be Government departments who do that as they are all idiots.

A little gold star for this prediction (22-07-2009 07:52) please, even if it wasn't exactly earthshattering!

Breathe Internet rides to the rescue of Breathe Networks, as per above.

Breathe Connect doesn't appear to have been used yet, so maybe that's next.

The (complete?) list of domains affected by the dispute with Spider Networks, as per the Spider Networks page, for those that can't reach it:

breathe.com
macunlimited.net
breathemail.net
whsmithnet.co.uk
fwi.co.uk
farmersweekly.net
quista.net
iclway.co.uk
pgen.net
arsenalfc.net
classicfm.net
ouvip.com
netmatters.co.uk
bluecarrots.com

Obviously there's others as listed a few posts up that have different problems, including those affected by the remarkably* coincidental problem with the Breathe (etc?) customer information database.

* Something of an aside, but from personal experience, big failures tend not to happen without reason, in this case I suspect the office/service move or preparations for it.
Speculation 1 : hardware failure - old machine shut down and moved, one or more disks didn't spin up when switched back on.
Speculation 2 : data problem
- 2a) a database got copied to another machine without being properly shut down first, the copy appeared to work, and then fell over some time later because with certain databases that method just doesn't work.
- 2b) A new database service was started up but was using data from an old backup.
- 2c) machine not properly shut down, database corrupted.

There's an open question of when the most recent Breathe office *actually* closed (before moving elsewhere). It's not like phones/numbers can't be forwarded so a sudden non-answering isn't really proof...

For the record...

Breathe Networks Ltd no. 05748229

In Administration as from 16/7/09

Insolvency practioners:
The MacDonald Partnership
LEVEL 25
TOWER 42
25 Old Broad Street
London
EC2N 1HQ

Is there a legal requirement to declare the fact of being in administration when doing business or making offers or taking payments etc?

There's one that is effectively what these people are doing but not doing the fancy footwork and getting caught out.

DBIS* PR 31/7/09 on using 'phoenix' companies to continue trading leaving unpaid debts

I think this is more about a 'trading as' scam as opposed to the technically legal method of e.g. 'management buyout' and doing pretty much the same thing.

So, does anyone have Mandelson's number? Would his department be interested in Breathe?

* DBIS is the recent(ish) merged DBERR and DIUS, headed up by Mandelson and several other lords, with a few MPs as a token gesture towards a veneer of accountability.
