Broadband better or worse in more rural area?

I have just had an offer accepted on a house! My current place is in a very urban area but the new one is in a more rural area (but not too rural).

I am sad enough to have checked how close the nearest exchange is to my new house and its less than 1 mile. Should I expect good speeds due to low contention or worse speeds due to potentially older equipment? I know that the exchange does not offer any LLU services or anything like that. To give you an idea of how rural it is type "millisons wood solihull" into google maps and click sattelite or hybrid view. Its not far from major towns/cities and does have its own exchange..

Just curious if anyone has been in the same position and had an improvment/degradation in performance (i play a lot of online games!).

Oh and i have the misfortune of being with PIPEX! I started with them 3+ years ago and am stuck with them till october due to upgrading and not being told this commits me to a new 1yr contract.

Are they moving this to the new address for free or Charging you a new activation fee?

You might find that moving house could make you a new 12 month contract should check this with them.

Generally it should be good. Of course, being rural means you wont have your exchange upgraded to llu or by Be anytime soon. But if you choose a good ISP, it shouldnt be too bad as long as your line is in ok condition.

I'm attached to an exchange that serves 6,500 residential properties. I live right on the edge of town but still urban by definition.

My parents live in the sticks are connected to an exchange that serves 195 residential properties.

I get 5Mbps, they get the full 8.

21CN is due in my exchange in 2011. It's due in my folks' exchange in 2008.

Rural doesn't necessarily mean at the back of the queue for new services! Check the exchange information on Sam Knows.

Well know that you say that I compared my current exchange to my new one on sam knows:

Old exchange:
13,303 residential premises
453 non-residential premises

New exchange:
1,410 residential premises
90 non-residential premises

Should I be expecting faster speeds from this providing the line is in good condition?

oh and:

BT 21CN rollout status
Target date: Q1 2009

Generally - yes. But there are so many variables its impossible to say until you actually get it up and working.

Yep I have my fingers crossed. I may ditch pipex in the process because I would rather saw off my own legs than inadvertently sign up for another year with them! Firefly are looking good at the moment...

Depends entirely on how far you are from the exchange and the quality of the line from the exchange into your house. I am 5.7KM from our exchange, but have connection on new 100 pair from exchange to my nearest DP, then good cable to my house, and regularly synch at 4.1M, giving a download speed of 3.5M. Considering 10 years ago BT considered I was marginal for ISDN, its amazing how well it works in the middle of nowhere.
To optimise your speed, I would say use a high quality ADSL router like the Netgear DG834, and a good ISP like BT Business Broadband.

Hi twds,

A little off the track for this thread - but am interested in your sync rate.

I too live around 5 km from local exchange, but am connected via old (and probably badly routed) cables. My router (3com) reports an attenuation of arounf 63db / noise margin about 9dB. I regularly sync at about 1350 kbps - which gives me 1Mbps d/l rate.

What sort of attenuation and noise margin is your DG834 reporting to achieve (enviable) download speeds you get. I only ask because if I thought that changing router would improve my download rate I'd be getting my credit card out of my wallet.

Cheers - and sorry for highjacking the thread - Techno Peasant
