Broadband Britain in poor shape...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6552823.stm

A spokesman for Virgin Media, formerly NTL/Telewest, said some of what the BSG was calling for was already available over cable. He added that Virgin Media's 10Mbps service will increase to 20Mbps from May this year and it is running trials of 50Mbps among some customers in Ashford, Kent.

Mr Meek said it was hard to put an exact figure on how fast networks are going to have to be in the future, but speeds of 20Mbps and upwards were at the lower end of most estimates.

The new networks must reach all parts of the UK
There was little evidence that the UK's existing telecoms infrastructure would be able to bring such high speeds to much of the population, he added.

It's just confirming what most of us here already knew, and it will get worse before it gets better. What's the point of having more speed, when UK providers have the most draconian usage allowances anyway...

The UK will end up a laughing stock as the rest of world enjoys their cable/fibre connections, while we keep thrashing the hell out of an already overloaded telephone network. Quite sad really...

Broardband Britain

Hi Agrajag,

I agree with what you have to say about the speeds of the Internet and the way things seem to be going. The price of Copper has risen so much lately that it is now cheaper to think of Fiber Optic cable rather than Copper cable, but.

The BUT is nearly every road in the UK would have to be dug-up to provide FTTH for everybody which will make the cost prohibitive for BT and any other ISP to even consider.

All the telephone poles would have to go.

This is why we remain at the bottom of any list regarding speeds and service.

Paul.

There was a news article on the front page a while back about a company from North Wales who were laying fibre in the sewers, that seemed like a (careful :D ) step in the right direction. They supposedly had agreements allowing them access to 80% of the UK sewer network.

But like I said before, its no good having 25mb down speed, if you are only allowed to download 40gb a month.

I doubt BT would do FTTH, instead they'd be more likely to replace the cables running to their cabinets (FTTC). This would allow some xDSL technologies to deliver far faster speeds over the remaining line distance, cutting down on a number of the problems inherent with DSL technology.
