broadband connection/speed problems

Have two PCs (desktops) linked to network and internet via BT Home Hub router (the tall thin white one).
The router shows via the BT Hub Manager that the speed is approx 7mg, but the performance is very poor. Slow speeds to connect to internet (if at all), e-mails time out.

So, disconnected everything.

Unscrewed the front plate of the main phone line socket, plugged in new filter, then plugged the router. No phones, no extensions.

Used a laptop with a "clean" XP setup (but does link easily and fast to internet and e-mail on another network). Installed the BT CD stuff, and connected the router.

The router said that the speed was around 7mb, but the "speed" was awful, and although I could get small e-mails to send, any with an attachment (even a small file - 30kb) would timeout. Exactly the same results as happened with the original two PCs.
Internet access was also very slow - faster with dial-up.

Also tried another router (D-Link DSL-G604T), used factory settings, but I'm not sure what the userid/password to put in to get internet connection. But, again it showed a speed of around the 7mb mark.

Exactly the same problems occurred with previous ISP.

That leads me to think it's the line, but if so I can't understand why the two routers I have tried both say the line speed is around 7mb.

Any ideas greatly appreciated..

Rannoch.

If you are having slow speeds and suspect that it is your line causing them you could run the following tests and report the results to your ISP:

1) You will need to disconnect and then reconnect using the
alternative username of speedtest@speedtest_domain, no password required.

2) You will then need to visit http://speedtester.bt.com/ via a web
browser and perform the speed test.

3) Once the test is complete, you will need to log out and then back
in with their normal details and run the test from
http://speedtester.bt.com/ again. There will need to be a half-hour
wait between tests - this is a BT constraint to ensure that the
problem is not time-specific.

You could also run a trace route to any website which will highlight if there are latency issues on your line.

Ultimately you should raise this with your ISP especially after running the BT speed tests.

I hope that helps!

Hi Rannoch

I use a D-link 604t so I will send you some info on it, but beware of using the factory setting as there a bug that gets through it o'k:nod: sorry I cannot pm you with info so go to d-link web site for more info? also use speedtest.net to check your speed ??

Tried all the suggestions without success.

Couldn't get any connection to speedtest@speedtest_domain

Finally, contacted BT Broadband Support.
They tested the line three times, and reported it was running at approx 6mb.
Asked me to link to www.speedchecker.bt.com, and it reported that it was running at 6mb.
The representative then tried to remote connect to my pc without success.

Their rules will not let them report to BT Wholesale for an engineer to test the line locally althougth I said I was happy to pay.

All they can do is try to get a "BTgeni.." at least that what I think he said - I think he meant line expert to come out an check the lines. If the fault was found internally it would cost £115.

I'm not sure what this guy will check. Is he/she an IT person. Will they have their own PC to run broadband connection checks.
