i ordered it yesterday through the isp i work for, so i can monitor the order. the date for installation has been set for the monday the 13th, but we shall see.

Strange answers from the checker! We have 2 BT lines in our house, the main one used for most incoming/outgoing voice calls has always been here! For this one the checker has told me:
Your exchange has ADSL broadband.
Our initial test on your line indicates that you should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides 2Mbps, 1Mbps, 512Kbps or 256Kbps download speed.
If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the speed of service you wish to purchase.
Thank you for your interest.

The second line I had installed mainly for internet use as the main line had to be available for emergency use re elderly relatives. This line comes into an upstairs room where I disappear for hours my wife says. This is the line I would use for broadband. The checker for this line tells me:
Your exchange has ADSL broadband.
Our initial test on your line indicates that you may be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides 512Kbps or 256Kbps download speed. However, due to the length of your line, an engineer visit may be required, who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.

How could there be such a massive difference? Perhaps the line wanders round the town and is jointed with sellotape? Please help this elderly guy who just wishes to have broadband and a speedier service!

I assume that the second was installed so that the main wasn't engaged all the time whilst you were on the internet.

If this is the case then why don't you cancel this second line and have broadband connected to the main line. As broadband allows you to connect to the internet whilst still keeping the phone line free for voice calls you should get the best of both worlds and save you a bit of money. Just run an extension from the main socket.

As for the differing results it may be that as BT recycle telephone numbers it's records may still have details for where your second number was originally located. It's not unheard off for people with 2 lines to get different results from the checker.

i have the exact same thing with phone lines

300m difference between two totally different lines & over 2 km with the house over the road from me.

I've already got a 521k connection but the checker says that I may need an engineer to visit if I want a 1Mb connection.

I think that it always gives that unsure engineer visit line for 1Mb if they consider you out of reach for 2Mb. There checker isn't exact and only works off a couple of variables. I don't think there actually is such a message as "you can have upto 1Mb no problem", its always an unsure message if they believe you can't have 2Mb.

You should have absolutely no problem though. And in fact if your attenuation numbers are correct you should now have a very good chance of 2Mb. Because I've heard that the limit for 2Mb has actually changed slightly from 41db to 43db (slightly higher if you already have ADSL). Although I believe its not represented in the ADSL checker ATM.

Ok, my colleague has spoken to BT. My order is apparently going through without any probs.

This is what the BT checker said for me

"Our initial test on your line indicates that you may be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides 512Kbps or 256Kbps download speed. However, due to the length of your line, an engineer visit may be required, who will, where possible, supply the broadband service."

No engineer for me.

Broadband at Last!!!

Received my Modem yesterday from NDO who advised me that my activation date would be the 13th of Sep.

Attached the various wires etc and powered it up and had a solid green DSL light straight away.

Now surfing at 0.5 meg which, compared to the dial up that I've had to put up with, is pretty good!
