Broadband outage today?

I've had no internet since I woke up at 6am this morning. I have fttc with fast.co.uk whom I have called and have told me that it is a major BT outage affecting many ISPs (more info here: http://status.fast.co.uk/). However, if this is as widespread as he says, I don't know why I can't find any information on this or other forums about other people having problems.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Ian.

p.s. I have put this on the general forum rather than the fast.co.uk specific forum as it is, allegedly, an issue with many other isps.

According to Fast's network stats page it states it is affecting '21CN (up to 24Mbps) ADSL connections'. If you are on FTTC then this should not affect you, unless they have mis-printed. It could be a local network issue, and not nationwide, in which case your service may be affected by the restoration work needed to resolve the issue. Do any of your neighbours face the same problem? Are they on FFTC, ADSL2+ orADSL1? The only thing that you can do at the moment is keep checking with your ISP where BT Wholesale/Openreach are at with it. But I would ask them to be certain it is affecting FTTC as according to their site it is not :/

Yes, the status page makes no mention of FTTC which is why I gave them a call. They told me that FTTC connections are also affected but who knows. I'm at work so it's no big deal at the moment. Hopefully it will be resolved by the time I'm home.

Hi,

FTTC is a 21CN based product, so due to this being a 21CN outage we are seeing FTTC connections affected, I'll get the status page updated to make this clearer, sorry about that.

I'm aware of 2 other providers affected by this whose names have been mentioned on calls with BT Wholesale - don't forget not all providers are as willing as us to give out information, or ensure accurate status pages :)

Rest assured everything possible is being done to restore service and once resolved we'll provide a full incident report clearly confirming what happened.

I can connect to my slingplayer at home now so I presume problem resolved. Still no sign that I can see of this affecting other isp's.

Hi,

Yup this resolved earlier.

One of the providers I know were affected don't have a status page I can find, and the other has no mention of it - I guess it depends how many they had affected and how "open" they are about the cause of issues.

Our status page will have a report within 48 hours, where the cause will be clearly given.

Glad to hear you are all back online :)

Mark

Thanks Mark. I'm glad that the issue has been resolved.

I'm not easily impressed but I must say I'm reasonably pleased with fast here. Although I would like to have seen confirmation that the problem was indeed more widespread, I was able to speak to someone quickly and also their website was updated regularly.

I just happened to trip over this thread referring to Fast.co.uk and was impressed by the FAST response - puts the Big Boys out with the Rubbish - I am on Dial-up and have been looking for suitable Broadband and phone Anytime package for 3 months - Have been looking recently at Fast and so far havent been able to find ANY grumbles other than this one -I think small is beautiful and will be contacting them to make sure they are a suitable fit.
Is there any way Fast.co.uk can email me their Terms and Conditions

Impressed

Which ISP do you use today silv.surfer? It looks like you're on a NetServices based connection.

I am on steam dial-up direct to my Yahoo box but I also have a uk2 box that I could access either direct dial-up or via yahoo but the uk2 mail went too fast and could'n handle my then slow dial-up so they put a forward on it until further notice when I get Broadband sorted ( I was running Windows 98 SE and IE 6 ) I now have XP Service 3 and IE7 but it is the Dial-up that still stops my easy access to uk2
Question: will I still be able to use both my yahoo and uk2 boxes - I still have BT Line Rental but this will go to the Broadband ISP - Calls with Talktalk but I dont want to go with either or them after the info from the Forum - I will try the PM but dont know if I will get it right on this Forum - here goes !!!

I dont know I just dial yahoo number and used to be able to acess uk2 from there also, but uk2 site got too fast for dial up even dialing them direct so they told me a way to access through site page but it takes about 8 minutes and at 0.7p per min is too costly so they have put a forward on until further notice and I can get Broadband sorted - I have gone from Win 98SE to XP Ser.3 and IE7 but it is the dial-up that is the problem

Is there any way I would be able to keep a dial-up modem in the PC and plug in if I got a Broadband outage that I keep hearing about - I am a belt and braces person !!!

I really am a silver surfer rookie and would appreciate any help

There's no problem with keeping a dialup modem for backup, lots of people do it, although these days it's normally more preferable to have a pre-paid Mobile Broadband modem to hand (assuming you have coverage) for when things go wrong.

Yahoo mail accounts can generally be accessed remotely and the same with UK2 I believe, unless of course it's part of a monthly subscription service in which case they might have locked it to a particular connection. I would think it should be ok though as neither are proper internet access providers.

Thanks for your reply - no there is no subscrition or contract of any kind - I was only worried because I understand yahoo is something to BT as I still pay BT for line rental but I used to be only with freeserve=wanadoo=orange, then orange changed 0845 to 0844 at double price so went to uk2 I may have got yahoo then, they are also 0845 but I dont remember for sure - I can get one 0845 number even dial up at 30% discount - I still have an old Friends and family phone account with Talktalk - I havent changed package since original switch calls in 2001 inspite of them trying to get me onto Evening etc - so I must have an old rolling contract. I didnt notice until now that both Fast and you are Marks' I may look like duplicate posting - I should have addressed first one to Fast are you able to get in and address 1st one to FAST Mark
(no pun intended) I cant find Edit for THAT ONE I left a PM for him as requested
I just wondered if when my Line Rental goes to another Broadband will BT stop me using my Yahoo box
Thanks for any advice

Hi Silv.Surfer,

If you only pay for BT's line rental then no since Yahoo's platform is also a freemail service and open to new users via webmail too. However it might be worth checking around to see if you can find the Terms and Conditions for the email service to see if there's any clauses like "must connect to your dialup account at least once every 90 days", although I doubt that will be the case.

Just pick a broadband ISP that includes a free router (it will be pre-configured so you'll just need to plug it in) and if you have any doubt then simply use the dialup connection to check your email once every couple of months. That should cover the bases :) .

To Mark J

I wondered if I would be able to access Yahoo and uk2 through a Broadband connection so I wouldnt have to change addresses - I would only use the Dial-up connection in Emergency as another way to access if needed. but hope to mainly use Broadband to access them otherwise there is not much point in getting Broadband at all.

I havent heard from FAST Mark I sent him PM with mail address as requested by him Are you able to Add FAST to the first of the 2 posts I didnt realise they would come out looking like a duplicate posting

Thanks for your help

It shouldn't be a problem silv.surfer, but if in doubt why not try making a new dialup profile and connecting to one of the other free 0845 dialup numbers around (see our ISP List page). If you connect and can still check your mail then there's definitely no problem with any broadband ISP.
