Broadband possabilities - Help a gamer who's down on his luck.

Hi,

I've recently moved into a new place and it would seem the best net connection kicking around for me it 0.5mgps which is the worst possible news for someone like me who loves to game online alot. :hrmph:

I've been doing my best to see if its possible to get better then that or even to use Mobile broadband instead. Sadly Virgin dont cover that area either.

I'll be there for roughly 6 months but i'd still like to try get the internet regardless, I'm pretty sure i could move it to my new place after that time anyway.

I'm mainly an Xbox360 user but i do also have a PS3, Wii and the PC but only the 360, PS3 and PC will be the ones i want the net for.

The area i live in is Norton, Sheffield, S5 6EF. Nearest Exchange is Attercliffe.

If anyone can lend a hand to a gamer down on his luck it'd be greatly appreciated. :D

Thanks in advance everyone and if you require any further information just ask.

Cheers
Steve ;)

going from your postcode you should get;
You are connected to the Attercliffe telephone exchange.
ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
According to BT Wholesale, houses at your postcode should be able to support a 2Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.

also O2 / Be Unlimited is available in your area.

I've spoken to BT who said 0.5mg is the connection im likely to get. I havent yet spoken to O2 or BE but thats on my to do list for today.

My area says 2mg but my landline says 0.5mg.

I'm open to options.. if there are any haha.

One thing to consider is that your multiplayer experience is based more on the upstream performance of your connection and not the downstream. Due to this it shouldn't make a massive difference whether you have a 0.5Mbps or 24Mbps connection because most multiplayer games only need about 50 to 120Kbps (0.05Mbps to 0.12Mbps) upstream for a good connection. The old style 0.5Mbps links came with 256Kbps (0.25Mbps), while the newer ADSL MAX based ones can output around 400Kbps, so you should be fine for multiplayer either way.

Sadly if the results for your line are what the line checkers say then you can't do much about that, it's kind of a physical restriction. Fitting a BT iPlate might improve things but personally if O2 (Be Broadband) covers your area then your best bet is probably with them.

O2 dont cover my area. apparently im 5.8km out of range.. Alot of BB providers dont seem to wanna give me broadband due to the poor speed rate i'll get (0.5mg) although i know mobile broadband is an option just for the PC failing any decent home broadband. Is there no way to use mobile broadband for the likes of Xbox360? :crap:

I'm beginning to hate this new place -_- haha.

I've spoken to virgin who said I should be able to get 1mg or 1.5mg all been well. So I'm giving them a swing.

Far as gaming goes I guess i'll just to see how it goes and pray for the best.

I would be careful with Virgin ADFSL many do ot get the ful speed try one that has a short contract of one month VM is a 12month contract

yeah, the one i've been offered has a 28 day trial period. So i'll see how it goes.

My top speed for that area is 2mg anyway. I dont expect 2mg or if im honest 1.5mg but i'd settle with a 1mg connection i guess. Well aslong as gaming on it isnt a giant ballache anyway.

I've signed up to a game rental service (swapgame.com) so i've covered myself for games to play for the mean time. Sadly Vm has offered me the best option (which still sounds very wrong to me haha) so I'll ride out the trial period and see what happens. If its not worth the trouble then i'll just cut it off. Get mobile broadband rolling contract for 6 months and then look for a new place to live that has a decent bloody broadband capability.

What makes this all feel much worse is the fact that the areas which are covered with better broadband speeds are the scummy council estates that are on the horizon... Just aint fair! haha. Why cant i have a nice house and good broadband speed to boot >.<

You might have had the same offers if you had contacted other suppliers like Aquiss VM have used your postcode

I contacted a large number of providers before having to settle with Vm.

Contacted:
Aol
TalkTalk
Telecom
Orange
Bulldog
O2
PlusNet
Nildram
Zen
Eclipse

Not heard of Aquiss though. Just checked it and even Aquiss said 0.5mg.

Like i said though, I'll give it a swing and if its not good enough then i'll cancel it and get mobile broadband in for 6 months.

what BT have been doing is if someone has internal wiring problems and speed drops if this person never fixes this problem then BT reduce the speed they say the line can handle. I have a friend that was in similar position once she sorted her internal wiring foloing my instructions placing router to master downstairs and connecting upstairs PC's by wireless she has a steady 2meg all the time so BT have now increased the speed her line can support.

hmm, its a rental flat. so i dont know where i stand to be able to do any of that. Though i'll take any tips or help you can offer to make it a better connection :D

thanks, so mobile broadband is a no then it would seem haha.

TalkTalk called me back the other day saying they can do better then originally quoted offer me a constant 1-2mg connection (yeah i dont entirely beleive it either). Something about ASDL2 line or some BS. So i've cancelled the virgin for now and i'll give talktalk a chance to prove their not full of ****. 30 day trial with it so will see how it goes. :)

a bit late but easynet are llu in your local exchange so you could also get sky/ukonline,uko btw will fast path your connection too providing that your line is good enough to allow this, fast path btw is low latency(ping)
