Broadband provider advice

Hi all, Im at my wits end with Virgin Media (ongoing speed failures which i won't go into!)

Think the time is right to switch but I'm after some advice before speaking to a new provider.

My question relates to installation mainly, VM uses a coaxial which I've had run, under our wooden floor to the media part of my lounge.

I wondered if anyone has any info on how Sky, BT and the other big players run their cables/access etc.

I don't want to necessarily rip up the floor or have cables running everywhere so keen to know which provider would be the least line of resistance to the TV setup.

Thanks in advance..

Virgin Media are the only mainland cable operator that uses coax (although Sky do use it for their Satellite TV service), while Openreach's network generally prefers twisted-pair copper lines and you'd be very lucky if you live in an area where optical fibre (FTTP/H) is available. It would help to have a postcode so the area can be checked for alternatives.

Most ISPs use Openreach's network and there's a good chance that your house will already have a mastersocket and copper wiring installed to support that (nearly everybody does), although until G.fast arrives then you'll probably find FTTC to be a lot slower (depending upon how bad your Virgin speeds were). Again the performance depends on your location, so it's hard to know without more info.

However you could still make use of that coax cable because it's possible to convert it via an adapter in order to carry a standard Ethernet signal, which means you can use it as a LAN cable that plugs into the back of your router. Alternatively you could always harness the power cables in your home via powerline adapters to run a network or boost the WiFi.

All depends on the setup you want.
