Broadband ? What a joke !

Today, my broadband on 512K is a big joke as the speed had dropped below 40K all day. I know my pc haven't got any virus as I always updates AVG every single days. I had checked my Netgear NG834G Wireless Firewall Router and try reboot the router and also reboot pc. Try the speed test as it still the same.

Speed Test Results:
Day 1: 470.4K
Day 2: 461.0K
Day 3: 471.4K
Day 4: 456.6K
Day 5: 460.0K
Day 6: 453.8K
Day 7: 36.1K

Broadband must be a joke as it well below 56K modem. The website is terrible as it took over 3 minutes to load the full page of the BBC Homepages.

Maybe the exchange is full on 50:1 today to slow down the speed.

I assume you're a Plusnet customer from one of your previous posts ? There's a long thread over at ADSLGuide - click->link - about what appear to be people with recent speed problems (due to network upgrade ?).

Speed Problem

Yes, I am with Plusnet 512K Home Premier, the speed is terrible since Plusnet had upgrade network that cause my broadband downhill !

I try test tomorrow, if the speed is still the same, then I think it not my pc at all, because I did try on my laptop as the speed appear the same! Plusnet must sort it out with their network as many other's customers isn't happy since Plusnet had upgrade the new network.

I wish they just leave the old network alone! No wonder that Plusnet want to upgrade new network to get ready for dslmax up to 8Mb that could be getting worse!

The Plusnet upgrade was to sort out load-balancing problems with their old mix of pipes. Might be worth posting to the thread I linked to and keeping an eye on it - the more people complain the more time their network engineers are going to spend looking at it. :hrmph:

Re-think Again !

I think I had to re-think over Plusnet going to change alots in April. One things, that I don't like is throttled speed once you went over the limit like eg from 8mb to 128k as it sound putting us off!

I been looking up at F2S (Freedom2Surf) as they had secret of plan to introduce a new dslmax up to 8Mb but with 150GB limit a month then after that charged at £1.50 per GB as there is no throttled back to 128k from the 8mb as f2s is likely to offer around £24.99 but still no usages meter at between 1am and 6am. So, I had to re-think to see if I am plan to staying with Plusnet or moving to Freedom2Surf. I had to wait and see what happen in April.

Broadband is ALWAYS ON, SHOULD BE ALWAYS UNLIMITED !! I don't agree with cap on broadband not on the higher speed on 8Mb

I agree in principle but unfortunatly the bank managers of these ISP's doesn't. As well all know bandwith costs money and someone somewhere has to pay the bills. I don't agree with the illy 1gb/2gb/30gb caps etc etc but caps that are say 50gb+ won't really affect t he majority of users and those who download more will simply have to pay for it int he future. I for one will be trying to stay unlimited for as long as possible but its days are heavily numbered.

I think the average download (traffic ?) for a Plusnet ADSL user is around 8 gigabytes/month and, with the change in BT charging, heavy users are going to feel the pinch, financially, from the vast majority of ISPs. :(

Luckily I'm not a heavy user most of the time (< 30 gigabytes/month) and can schedule downloads in off-peak hours if I really have to. :)

Hi All

I`ve been reading these forums for over a year now and finally I think its about time i posted something.

Like everyone I`m really concerned about ISP`s continuing to introduce caps but yet people still seem to be signing up to these ISPs

I use Demon internet and they seem to get very little press but all their services are completely unmetered!, and connection speeds are always very fast also I`m a big online gamer and always get low pings compared to friends.

The only way we can stop this capping nonsense is by people to change to a ISP that have none

RANT OVER :D

I don't think that many isps are offering UNLIMITED or UNMETERED like what onephat was saying......someone had to pay for the bandwidth usages to BT otherwise the isps will be force out as a bad debt.

I believe that many isps offering UNLIMITED or NO RESTRICTION DOWNLOAD LIMIT advertment should be BANNED because there is a hidden small print somewhere in their policy fair usages or terms and conditions about heavy downloading users.

By the year 2005, many isps will be soon be capped and then 2006 I reckon all 100% broadband will be CAPPED even not just BT ADSL but also on CABLE like telewest. Because BT say that end of year 2005 that UK will be 100% broadband enabled mean there will be lots of traffic on the network server.

I think 62 GB a month is a fair usages for everyones that work out 2 GB a day but under 30 GB in a month is not good enough because of updates windows, anti-virus, checking emails, surfing, downloads a few things, video streaming and even a webcam too.

Hi there,

I would suggest you check your exchange status at http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/
If you can run some traceroutes, complete some BT speed tests (http://usertools.plus.net/tutorials/id/27) and raise a support ticket then we will have a look into this for you. You might also want to try playing with your MTU/RWIN settings. A useful resource for soing this can be found here: www.dslreports.com/tweaks

Kind Regards,
