BT 18mth Contract

Hi,

Do I have to stay the full length of this?? If say I decide in 6mths I want to go to an independant ISP..can I do this or am I stuck. Have previously used rolling 1mth contracts.

Thanks

The idea of contracts it that you have comitted to a minimum term, for example, 18 months!

Leaving during this minimum term often requires payment of the remaining months on the contract and sometimes an administration / termination fee.

If you have come to the end of your 18 month contract most ISPs then continue on a month by month basis, BT however, fairly recently introduced "renewing" contracts which dump you into another 18 Months without much (or clear) warning. :|

I agree with DRSOX 100%, if you leave early you will be penalised with all sorts of charges.
ie, all outstanding monthly payments, although I think from Sept this may have been capped.
A contract is a two way agreement and not where one party can opt out when they feel like it.

Ok thanks guys. This is fair enough..but I'm still a little confused:confused:

Can I MIGRATE (with MAC) within this 18mth period though to another ISP??

Thanks

No, not without paying off the remainder of the contract, because you would be leaving BT or whoever you are currently with and moving to another company. Ie.. stopping paying BT and starting paying a rival company.
It would be the same as ceasing your service entirely.

You can migrate, BT can't stop you doing that, but they will probably ask for a fee because you would have left while you were still within your minimum contract period.

Your only other choice is to get out under the "unfair terms in consumer contracts regulations 1999", the next time BT either hike up their prices or make any other changes to the contract which would in any way leave you worse off, then in those circumstances BT have to let you go free of charge should you wish to leave.

You just have to keep an eye out for any changes.
