BT are doing my swede in! Should I replace the HH5 with a Billion?

Hi,

Im getting problems some evenings where pages are slow to load and most don't load at all. This can last anything from a few minutes to hours.

I've got 3 machines and 4 mobile devices this happens on wifi and ethernet but does not happen on my backup ISP so I know it's a BT Infinity issue. My sync and speed is never affected.

Should I try another router? I am not even sure what the username and password are I think it's just one username and no password.

I am getting really annoyed with this. I never had these problems with Zen and regret not staying with them now.

I get this when I try to go to a forum such as Spotify or even BT's own

Error code 20
The proxy failed to connect to the web server, due to TCP connection timeout.

But again this is only on BT and not on backup on same machines

It is strange that you are getting a message about Proxy.. it is unusual for normal home networks or computers to be using a proxy.

What browser is coming up with that message?
Do you see a proxy being enabled and set (if so, what are the settings?) in:
Start --> Run --> type in inetcpl.cpl and click ok.
Go to the connections tab.
Click the LAN Settings button.

Might also be worth posting screen shots of the failing page error messages too.

If the fault is happening across your entire network + all devices and assuming you're on a normal home peering rather than domain network, then it probably is connected to your router settings or at worse a fault with the ISP (at this stage the latter wouldn't be my first port of call).

At this point I'd also be suggesting that you try changing the router's DNS settings to Google Public DNS, but like other ISPs BT has locked their pre-configured router down so annoyingly you can't do that. You can work around that by turning off DHCP on the router and setting everything up manually, but I wouldn't recommend that with so many devices in your network and unless you know what you're doing.

Failing those the best bet may indeed be to grab a cheap VDSL capable WiFi router and try that to see if it improves the connect. If the problem still occurs then at least you can rule the router out and at that point the finger of blame casts more towards the ISP.

PS - You don't say if you're on BTInfinity or standard broadband?

Thanks for the replies both. I was tired when I wrote that but I could have sworn I did say BT Infinity, I also thought I said I had a Billion 8800NL too but I didn't so again apologies. But yes I will try the other router.

It's the 80/20 service. My mac is mainly the one that has the problem i don't use proxys and I dont use add ons expect for ABP which has never had a problem.

As I type this 192.168.1.254 brings up nothing in my browser. I won't bother resetting the HH5 I will just put my Billion on it and see how it goes. I don't use wireless on this ISP anyway it's direct Ethernet connection to my Mac.

Just came back to say Kudos to you Tom for using ICQ. I thought that died years ago but I am glad to see it lived on past the AOL days.
