BT Broadband system requirements.

Before subscribing to BT Broadband read this post.

I have been with BT Broadband over the past year and my annual subscription just came up for renewal. On renewal I upgraded to option 3.

Last year I was operating on Windows xp with 256mbRAM and the service was fine and on-line protection was included, I had no problem downloading Norton.

I tried to download Norton on receipt of my new option 3 service and couldn’t download the security. I upgraded to 512mbRAM and now I can (fine). The only problem I have is that I have to upgrade my laptop and other PC to 512mbRAM to use the on-line security package.

I contacted BT technical support and they did a 'share screen' and told me I should upgrade my laptop to 512mbRAM. (why should I). BT don’t tell its customers that they may need 512mbRAM when advertising, they did send me the following system requirements:

Please note that BT Yahoo! Online Protection has the following minimum
system requirements:
1. Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
2. Internet Explorer 6.0 (or later) with ActiveX enabled or BT Yahoo!
Browser 3.0 (or later) with ActiveX enabled.
3. 350MB free hard disk space.
4. RAM: 196MB for Windows 98SE and Windows 2000; 256MB for Windows XP
5. Network Access via BT Yahoo! for Broadband.

Thank you for using BT Total Broadband.

If this is true why indicate that I need 256mbRAM to use the service, when it's not enough, then when I have a problem tell me to upgrade to 512mbRAM. Which advice do you take?

My experience is based on fact that I cannot download without having 512mbRAM, I have shown it.

Anyone else having this problem?

Potential subscribers should be aware of BT’s advice on system requirements, before subscribing.

I am still in contact with BT, I've asked them to sort it, so I will keep you informed

BT Broadband Enough RAM?

I have solved my problem at a cost of upgrading 2 desktops and a laptop.

Last year I downloaded Norton antivirus with 128mbRAM in one desktop, 256mbRAM in another, and 256mbRAM on the laptop. So Norton 2005 downloaded with a requirement of 128mbRAM only.

This year, even with 256mbRAM fitted does not guarantee being able to download Antivirus, you need 256mbRAM available. The only way I could download is by upgrading all to 512mbRAM. So anyone choosing BT Broadband with Antivirus may just be lucky with 256mbRAM fitted or if you are unlucky you will need to upgrade to 512mbRAM.

It still remains that BT do not state to existing customers that they may need to upgrade to keep the Antivirus they already subscribe to, it just expires, then you can't download it again; they also do not indicate on their site what mbRAM you need to download Antivirus, you only find out what RAM you need when you try to download it, you've already subscribed by then.

So, if you've not got 256mbRAM available, you will need to go to 512mbRAM, to be safe.

It may be worth taking note because the same may apply with other ISP's.
If they offer online security with the package, it's a good idea to make sure you are able to download the security before subscribing.

In all, it's cost me an extra £120 to stay with BT Broadband for another year.

I hope next years Norton Antivirus don't do another double hike again, or I'll need 2 new PC's.

or you could of used a router, a free copy of avg and saved a few quid :) oh well at least its sorted.
