Bt con?

I've just ditched BT Yahoo anytime for Broadband, with another provider.

I contacted BT as I wanted to know if I could keep by BTInternet email address (for convienaince!). This is what they said...

>
> If you would like access to your emails via a mail client, such as Outlook
> Express, you could opt for BT Yahoo Premium mail.
There is a Subscription
> charge of £1.50 per month, and this supports POP/SMTP access plus free web
> space, but without the need to connect using a dial up connection to keep
> the account active. You can have a total of 5 email addresses, 1 primary
> and 4 secondary.
>
> BT Yahoo Basic mail service:
>
> Please note that BT Yahoo Basic mail does not provide dial-up access. It
> is solely intended for customer who will be accessing the Internet through
> another Internet access package, or via an alternative Internet Service
> Provider (ISP). The BT Yahoo Basic is a free service, which allows you to
> send and receive emails using the web mail facility only, located on our
> homepage only
. Please note that you have to open your mailbox once in
> every 120 days for the account to remain active.

All I can say is "oh no it doesn't" I can access all the emails sent to the BT Mail Basic Account through Outlook Express, with no problem. I can also access the BT Yahoo Home page, without the BT logos under My Yahoo.
I don't even need to dial up using PAYG!

The charge is correct and another example of their customer retention policy, ie make it more expensive to leave than to stay.

I am sure they will twig eventually that you are accessing a paid service for free  , get yourself a backup email address (buy your own domain name with free email) and migrate over time.

I dont the access will last long, the many people I have moved from BT get access until their next billing period, a few days later it starts complaining at them to "subscribe".

Getting your own email service was a great idea :D

That wouldn't surprise me - BT took my months subscription off me on the 9th and Anytime ended on the 13th. BT haven't yet responded to why they took my subscription, which even though it was £3.99 - I'll have to cancel the direct debit with the bank. That was after I asked them to finish at the end of the billing period.

I left BTYahoo in Nov 2004 and my old e-mail address is still working quite happily but I don't use it that much if at all.

I have since got my own domain as I wanted my email address separate from my ISP.

1and1.co.uk do an Instant Mail package for £0.69 per month + your domain cost (ex vat). Makes BT's £1.50 pm just for email seem quite excessive.

Quiet happy, with my Domain - considering it was set up over tlast weekend!
from www.clarence.com, they have a special offer at the monment .co.uk from £3.90 plus .com from £9 - mine was about £15 inc vat. Just need a cheap web host now.

I spoke too soon. My BT email is now suspended so it lasted at least 10 months after I left.
