BT Connection Charge

Hey guys,

I'm in need of some desperate help here.

I'm a student, about to move in to a house with 4 other people, and the time has come to think about phone and internet and we decided BT for phone...

Now, I've looked in to this quite a bit, the last tenants (who moved out in July) were BT customers themselves, whos contract ended in July, I was told about the BT connection charge of 122.50 or something that we would likely have to pay to get the line reactivated, however, I was then told that if all the connections at the house were in order and a dial tone was found then we would not have to pay that charge.

I just rang up BT to order and they told me we would still have to pay the reactivation charge despite having a dial tone and it working perfectly fine (before the contract ended in August I tried the phone and it worked) and the reason was something to do with an engineer needing to set up a connection between the exchange and our house... How could we receive a dial tone if the connection isnt set up?

We pretty much dont want to pay this charge, we feel that there is no reason for it (dial tone, when connected to BT previously the phone worked fine etc) and are concerned they are trying to pull a fast one on us, is there anything we can say to battle this charge, why would they still charge us even if we have a dial tone etc etc.

Good Afternoon,

Here are all BT public published charges http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/Public/current/Exch_Lines_boo/0002_d0e63.htm

The bit I believe refers to yourself is "If the premises has had telephone service from BT in the recent past, and the wiring and socket is undamaged and the line still has dialling tone, a connection charge may not be payable. Where there is no suitable BT telephone line available in the property a connection charge of £122.50(Inc VAT) may apply. This fee covers engineering work in the exchange or customer's property in order to connect the line. BT will advise of a connection charge at the time the order is placed however this will be confirmed after checks have been carried out against the details of your property, to ascertain the condition of the wiring and sockets."

Hi, that is correct, in that it refers to me, noting the first part of what you have quoted "and the wiring and socket is undamaged and the line still has dialling tone" everything appears to be in working order and with a dial tone, so i am left unaware as to why this incredible fee is being placed upon us.

If anyone can give me any info on whether them charging me this is valid, and if it isnt how I can argue it then I will be extremely grateful.

Have you tried quoting them their own policy, as per above, with reference to your line meeting that policy? From what I can tell BT's charge should not apply to you and as such you should request an explanation for why they are trying to levy it. It sounds to me like you're talking to the usual "big ISP" front line outsourced customer support team, sometimes nicknamed - HOPELESS.

Ok so, I rang BT again and the issue was sorted out.

Turned out my road is split in to two postcodes, I was given the wrong postcode for my house number by my landlord, so when I rang BT they had no record of the house having a BT landline, they informed me of the same address under a different postcode and after a quick search I found the postcode BT gave me was in fact the correct one, and they saw that the house had a BT line and we have been connected without charge.

Thanks for the assistance guys
