BT fibre - can it be used by a competitor

I have full fibre 500 from BT which works fine but it is expensive compared to other providers now. My 2 year contract ends in September and Youfibre offered to buy them out but then Youfibre engineers said there was a problem with H&S and therefore could not install their own fibre from the same pole. I have heard that BT have to allow competitors to use their wires and my question is do they have to allow competitors to use their fibre?

If you have BT full fibre, then that uses Openreach infrastructure. You can get full fibre from many other providers that use Openreach, including Sky, Zen, Vodafone, and many others. I hope that helps. :)

Thanks for that very helpful and do you know if there is a list of all the providers that use open reach?

Worth noting that the list is by no means exhaustive however. There are many more companies available that use Openreach. Shell and Onestream are two of the more well known names who use the same cables but aren't listed. And there's tons of other smaller or regional brands too. I mention those two names as they often compete for the lowest monthly prices on Openreach infrastructure.

Even huge names like BT Group's Plusnet brand is missing from the list though.

I would try youfibre again, see if theres anything that be done now? there pricing is so good 1000/1000 is £29.99?

Some sites to check on https://cable.co.uk https://bidb.uk also check the pole, is anyone else getting youfibre from it? o.0 (might have 2 cables going to their house)

Turns out ISPReview indexes most ISPs and plans so it's a great comparison tool, if you know where to look. There are no 500mb search pages but you know it will be between 100mb and 1gb plan, if the ISP offers it:

Gigabit Openreach ISPs sorted by price

100MB+ Openreach ISPs sorted by price

Prices may not be 100% up-to-date as obviously ISPs are constantly doing offers and changing prices but should give you a good candidate list. Some ISPs work with multiple networks so you may be offered only 1 network which may not be Openreach.

Sounds like pole is a bit rotted, and Openreach will use a cherry picker or climb it, but Netomnia/youfibre won't risk it or spend out to get a cherry picker

Or it could be that they have too many cables in the pole and can't attach more for H&S reasons. There are several H&S reasons as to why they might not be able to provision the service.

Openreach won't allow a company who runs their own completely separate fibre network (like YouFibre) to use the Openreach drop fibre. That would require disconnecting it from the Openreach network and connecting it to the Youfibre network.

Since Altnets have no service obligation, they can decline to service any property if it's too expensive or difficult to do so.

But the Openreach FTTP network is wholesale, so another company can connect to Openreach at the head-end exchange, and then take a service all the way from the Openreach OLT in the exchange to the Openreach ONT in the property.

The H&S reason is they have to stand on slight pitched roof to attach the fibre coming from the pole to our wall. BT did it but Youfibre won't !!

Hi

Sorry to hijack the thread.

I currently have Openreach FTTP from a pole 50 metres away.
A guy from BeFibre has called with an offer of full speed up and down at a competitive price and he assures me there will be no need for another o/h cable to my premises as Openreach will just connect my existing line to the BeFibre Box on the pole, is this right?
He also says the Linksys 6 router/modem is the dogs as well?

They are not allowed to touch the Openreach cable or remove your ONT.

BeFibre will have to run a new cable and fit their own ONT if you decide to swap and go with them.

Thanks for your replies gents, that's exactly what I was thinking, so the salesman is talking rubbish as usual.
