BT & Fibre to the Kerb?

BT, the UK telecommunications group, is considering the case for an ultra-fast broadband network that could deliver internet download speeds of up to 50 megabits per second.

Sir Christopher Bland, the BT chairman who stands down in September, said the company was looking at whether to install fibre optic cable as far as the street kerb, where BT phone line cabinets are found.

Although.. :hrmph:

no decision had been taken to go ahead with fibre to the kerb.

and, :crap:

any fibre roll-out would be in “selected areas”. Analysts said BT would focus on towns and cities.

...The Broadband Stakeholder Group said ministers and regulators had two years to find ways to encourage investment in high-speed broadband or UK competitiveness would suffer. ...

We already have pretty high speeds and will get an improvement with ADSL2+. There is no need to spend a fortune on fibre to the home (or maybe even kerb).

Yeh, but ADSL2+ is only any good if you literally live right next to the exchange. Speeds drop off at a frightening rate the further you move away from the exchange. Fibre to the kerb would benefit the likes of me who live light years (ok I exaggerate) away from the exchange. ADSL2+ would make little or no difference to my connection.

Some might have high speeds, but many other people do not. The prospect of an up to 24Mbps ADSL2+ provider is all very well, right up until it becomes clear that you might only get under 2Mbps of that. It's not a stable 2Mbps either.

The statistics provided by operators of who can get 4Mbps, 6Mbps etc. are also best estimates rather than practical reality.

Fair point, I'm pretty close to the exchange, but live in a rural market town so I'll probably never see fibre even if they do roll it out. :(

There might be a case for replacing copper with fibre in areas where extra lines are required or the condition of the existing cables necesitates replacement. Especially as copper is quite expensive these days and if the maintenance costs of fibre would be less.

Recovered Copper

If BT do get round to installing fibre to the kerb, then the copper cable they recover may just pay for the fibre they put in.

If BT do replace copper with fiber and then somthing like BT Vision takes off - would they be allowed to do it as technically it'd be cable TV and don't VM hold the franchside rights in most parts of the UK?

its about time they contemplated it, while its the expensive option its definitely future proofs for a while, sadly tho l'll always be outside the towns to really get this kinda access.

BT are currently trialing FTTC with ADSL in some parts of the country and getting good results AFAIK.

South East Dorchester??? I think but I can always ask one of my contacts in BT to see if I can get more information for you if you wished?
