Bt Infinity

Hi,

Ive recently had BT Infinity installed and running. My average speed is around 20mbps. When I ordered the service they offered me infinity 2 saying it was faster, but the technician who installed the service said it was infinity one. I called bt and asked them about this and they just said "its the connection speed, not the upload/download speed". Im paying more than I was with virgin for a third of the speed. Are they trying to rip me off here?

Any advice would be appreciated

What speeds did they say you would receive before you ordered this can be calculated by your address or telephone number. Did you try a BT number from someone living near you to see what speeds they could have?

How far from the cabinet are you?

These are all useful when fighting with BT for speed.

Thanks for the reply. They said between 16 and 25 megs. I done a few speed tests over the last 2 days since they installed it and its between 15-20megs. I seem to be pretty far from the cabinet, even though theres one closer they wont connect to it. Also ive been disconnected since this morning too. They are sending a technician tomorrow.

There's no point in buying the BT Infinity 2 service (up to 76Mbps) if the speed estimate they gave you was for less than the unlimited BT Infinity 1 (up to 38Mbps) as it's the same underlying FTTC/VDSL technology and won't magically give you more.

I wouldn't have continued the order had they given me such an estimate, I would have gone back and started again on Infinity 1. In fairness though the ISP, BT, should ideally understand the reality and inform the customer or adjust the product accordingly and also inform the customer before the order is complete.

So is the situation now that on your bill it clearly says you're paying for the Infinity 2 price despite not getting even close to Infinity 1's top speeds?

It looks like that but ive only had the service since last week, and there is still no service. I spent 40 mins earlier today to find out why the technician didnt attend as arranged and they finally said they will call me tomorrow. I guess ill have to talk to them about the speed and tariff whwn they call. I would have used virgin as I have done for over 10 years but the cable they use is damaged and they wont replace it. (I live in a block of flats). When I first called them they demanded £60 for installation of infinity 1. And they offered to remove it if I took infinity 2

Yeah, VM's cable is just coax. You could probably replace it yourself with a few F connectors and some satellite cable

So is what we're saying here, that BT sold you a product they knew at the time that they couldn't actually deliver (Infinity 2 speeds) on the basis of an upfront discount..

I would get a vm cable, but ill also have to get a cherry picker and probably permission from the council to use it at the top of a 12 floor block of flats :-P.

Bt said I should get between 16-25 megs. I get 20 max and the cabinet is quite far away. I spoke to them again in no uncertain terms saying if the disconnection isnt sorted out in 3 days they can shove their so-called infinity infinately becauae a technician disnt attend yesterday. Another is booked for tomorrow. They also said after the service is dealt with they will diacuss the speed and price with me. Sounds like im being led around a garden path atm and already considered sky, but they are even slower apparently
