BT Minimum connection speed

Hi all

Just moved house and got a new BT line installed. Getting a fairly crap connection speed (28.8) so phoned to get the gain increased.

Problem - I'm on a DACS line (i.e. shared) and 28.8 is what the BT engineer says is likely to be the fastest achievable. Before you ask, at least 3 years for broadband - I live in the countryside.

Question - is there a minimum connection speed that BT will guarantee (from memory 19.2 but hopefully this may have changed).

TIA

28k is very good for a dacs line, I don’t think BT have to guarantee any connection speed other than you would require to talk on a normal phone line. If you cannot get your own line try getting an isdn line to share. I would recommend home highway to anyone who cannot get ADSL, 64k is a much faster connection than the normal 56k modem dialup.

I seem to remember the maximum BT have to provide is 2400! Anything else is a bonus.

Had Home Highway for 3 months. Slow Internet access. High prices. Cannot use both computers at same time plus having to pay Internet and Phone charges. Was on Cable at last address. That was much better & cheaper & faster

If you read the contract Voice only. Data max 14400bps FAX speed.
Dacs will slow connection speeds 28k to 32k is normal for Dacs. If you want to get rid of it the Dacs that is, it can be done.

Upgrade to Homehighway if you can, it's pretty cheap under the BT Together plan.

I had the same problem, nagged and nagged BT got the third level where I got some lame anecdote about how the BT guy only had 14k connection himself. Importantly they said nothing could be done, but since I got Homehighway installed, on the odd occassion I've used a modem it goes in at 50k. They just needed to upgrade the line and get rid of the cheaper DACs solution.

Cheers

M

Yes, from what I have read on various forums it would appear that they can't install ISDN on a DACS line! So the answer is to get ISDN installed, then they have to give you your own line.
Minimum contract for ISDN is 12mths. If you don't want it after this, cancel, and you have a non-DACS line!!

:D

A couple of years ago I wanted a second line installing at home for internet usage, and i explained this to BT. That it was for internet usage only. They came out and installed a DACS when my wife was home, and she didn't know what one was. Anyhow, I complained to BT because I had told them that it was an internet line, and they came out and dug three holes around my house so that they could install a proper second line. Cost to BT about £1500 (so I'm told). Anyhow, I suppose I am asking did you tell them it was for internet use? Perhaps that gives you an arguement for getting them out to take the horrible box off your wall....

I used to work for BT (you may have already known this), and as it stands, they were perfectly entitled to DACS your line. You must have really kicked off with them (or got a brand new advisor on the phone)! BT only have to guarentee a line for VOICE usage, not internet, unless the line was for ADSL, un which case BT will provide you with a standard line (once again, only if you take a BT ADSL package).

Lucky!

BT should be shot

Just felt a need to state an opinion on the subject of BT DACsing people... Friend of mine was wondering why she couldn't get ADSL when she was more than close enough to get the full 2Mbps treatment... Further inspection discovered BT DACsed her and she didn't even know about it... I know they aren't required to provide anything other than voice and fax, but for a company apparently so devoted to providing fast internet access to the entire country, they're being very sneaky and mildly self-defeatist...

Normally BT will remove DACS to provide ADSL.

Thats what they did for me anyway.

bit of a bummer really... maybe you should get satelite broadband - though is a tad expensive :(

MM is this guy too far from the exchange or is the exchange not DSL enabled.

The reason I ask is that DSL actually works over longer lines than ISDN does it not
( contrary to popular belief ? ) so he is hardly likely to get ISDN if miles from the exchange.

No its actually ISDN that works over a longer distance as its a digital system (better noise immunity) & its lower frequency.

Well I and others have been turned down for ISDN alledgedly due to the line length being too long/insufficient quality but I have ADSL .

The man from B.T who visited this address claimed to have been specialising in the instalation of digital services for many years and to now be semi-retired. He also stated to me quite clearly that it was a misconception that ISDN had a longer ' reach' than ADSL.

This has happened to me in three ! different villages and four houses where I have been refused ISDN for length/quality reasons.

B.T in my area obviously disagree with you as they believe that my line is too long for ISDN but not for ADSL.

Not trying to de difficult or argumentitive or 'right' but am just stating thats what has happened to me and I'm not the only one.

I would certainly like a definitive answer from B.T as I dont like giving out second hand 'wrong' info from there employees ( if it was wrong) . He told me that by his loss calculations if i was about 300 metres closer to the exchange i could have ISDN but sadly I wasn't so he would have to refuse me.

The Broadband I have now have now been given without even a visit and it works faultlessly.

I'd be happy to be wrong and for even more peeps to get the line they want and deserve but I am living proof that in my case I was too far for ISDN but not for ADSL.

Cheers Mas
