BT Please help

dear oh dear i think ive messes up
ive gone crap ( fast4 ) to the crapper ( bt )
can anyone please advise
story is :-

joined bt total bb opt 3
3 days ago, connection speed is no more than 307kbs
download a 30 meg bt update file took 48 mins
been on the phone to india they tell me about the 10 day period. etc etc
is this true ? the ten day story ?
also
when i signed up and done the speed test i was told i was able to get a possible 5.5meg on the line, now ive spoken to a very unhappy sounding scottish lady at bt who informs me that my line is only capable of getting 2meg. how is this, when i was with fast crap 4 i was getting 5 - 5.5 connection speeds now with bt its down to 2 ? why would it say 5.5meg line speed in the signup and now 2 ?
i feel astho im getting sucked in ! im soooooooooooo angry

bare in mind 8 meg connections are only "upto" as its not a fixed rate like normal normal adsl...

as for the 10 day period, yes it is true your speed WILL fluctuate and will spend the next 10 days "training" to get the best possible speed without problems, so until the 10 day period passes l would not pass judgement.. only then do you have reason to complain once the line has settled.

(someone please correct my information if l got it wrong, however this is what l have been told and noticed when lve transferred etc)

Yes, there is a 10 day training period with ADSL max services while BT's DLM determines the maximum stable rate for your connection.

But, if you were already on the same IPStream max product (same upstream connection speed) with your previous ISP, then you don't normally go through the training period again. (note fast4 put some of their users on max premium 832kbps up)

I suggest posting your router stats (see http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm if you don't know how to obtain them) and the results from running BT's performance tester here:- http://speedtester.bt.com (This displays your current IP profile and connection rate as well as throughput).

(Should you want to know the full technical details of how it works you can find the BT adsl max handbook for ISPs here:- http://www.btwholesale.com/content/...pstream/handbook/IPstream_Max_handbook_v7.pdf )

The BT speed guestimater http://www.btwholesale.com/getbroadband uses the data collected from their monitoring equipment so during the training period, and also if your line has a fault the estimate can drop.

Can you do another BT speed test from the test socket behind the face plate of the master BT box. Please remove all other wiring from the line leaving just the modem/router.

Your sync is only 512k.... which points to there being too much noise on the line.
Also make sure the sky box is not plugged in to the phone line or power socket for test.

I have highlighted your download speed in red
and the actually speed obtained in blue.

For some reason you are profiled at 350kbps.

You can reset a line profile by removing all adsl equipment, including filters and replace them after 30 minutes; this should reset the line.
Do it then try the speed checker again; if there is no improvement then you will need to speak to BT (good luck with that, they are all talk and no action).

this is after took everything out of the phone socket
and i disconnected the hub and replaced it with my voyager 105 modem

why the change in down stream rate ? but still the actual is crap !

6 mins to download winzip from download.com 9mb file @40kbs now thats not right is it ?

should i reconnect the hub ? or leave the voyager modem in ?
im gettibng so so so so so so peeeeed off
should of stayed with fast4, at least my speed was ok with them

The sync speed has inceased to 4.5meg wait 3 days and the IP profile will change to suit, looks like someting internal a filter extension cable has degraded and introducing noice to the local loop.

Your equipment you removed might be faulty if the wireing is ok but the reduction in sync is inside your home change filters, try adding one piece of equipment at a time to see which introduces the noise.

Bt made an adjustment on august 7th to the programme (cannot remember it's name!) that changes the profile that the line is on to react quicker than 3 days, i will presume this happens in the 10 day period.

It can change within a few hours depending on the stability of your line, so no more waiting 3 days. Which helps me out as my line likes to slow down time to time.

If the modem is syncing higher than the hub this could be the following reasons:

1. faulty hub
2. Bt hub is crap (from my experience with them)
3. drivers need to be updated
4. line has improved

Some bits of kit work better being closer or further away from the exchange on dsl max, it's a different type of beast to fixed adsl.

HTH

should my upload speed really be higher tan the download speed ?

i just tested on speedtest.net
the dl speed is 349
the up speed is 372

yet when i download any file its still less than 40kbs

will it make a difference to my service if i use the voyager modem as apose to the hub ?

thanks for all the help so far guys !
if only the indians were as helpful as this, they do try tho lol
the other day i was on the phone to tech, 15 mins into the conversation out of the blue the tech guy asked me to spell my name.......oh my i was going to flip. so i spelled it out o him and the support continued lol wtf is all that about

yet when i download any file its still less than 40kbs

Do you mean 40 Kilobits (Kbps) per second or 40 Kilobytes per second (KBps)? 40 Kilobytes per second = 320 kilobits per second which is about your current IP profile.

You IP profile has been badly affected by your previously poor sync rate, it will recover possibly within hours although it could take up to 5 days.

If your hub is faulty, you should get BT to replace it as you are paying for it in your package. I think you also need it if you want to use their VOIP service.

things seem to be moving
