BT restricting speeds?

Ive been told by a friend who rang up BT, that they said they are the only ones that can supply over 2MB. Now I dont know ADSL fully, but Im pretty sure thats a load of tosh.

I dont know if the exchange in question is LLU unbundled, is there a checker somewhere?

Note this is not totally reliable, for instance it doesn't include AOL. I believe Talktalk also offer an LLU product at my exchange although sam still reports no confirmed date.

Any ISP can obtain and supply the same BT Openreach wholesale products and speeds as BT Retail - I believe Ofcom insist on it.

All internet service providers in the United Kingdom are able to offer up to 8mbs max dsl services.

These are provided to every internet service provider in the United Kingdom via Bt Wholesale.

Obviously some internet providers will either a) not offer up to 8mbps dsl services or b) use LLU products to offer far faster speeds.

I hope that this helps.

It seems BT have some new idea of sorting out faults where lines are having issues they cap the customer to 2MB without telling the ISP or the customer.

This is totally wrong and BT have over stepped teh mark they market it as upto 8mb but if someones router is syncing at 8mb and they are only getting 2mb coz BT capped it instead of finding out why they was having problems is OTT. This needs to be more out in the open and i feel BT needs to be pulled over this practise.

Thanks all for answers, thats what I thought. And thanks Mel for the link, I must bookmark that, its very handy.

BT are doing all sorts of funny things recently. My gran has moved house, and they say they need to send an engineer round, which will take 3 weeks and cost £125!

Which is odd, because the people that moved out that day had a phone line.

I would be asking why they need to send an engineer round when the house had a working phone the day before when the old residents left.

Argue.

When I moved home last year, I read the bit on BT's web site that reckoned that if there was an existing line at the new address there would be no charge. Knowing that the previous guy had cable, so the BT line here was disconected, ancient and probably naff, I specifically asked them whether this still applied in the circumstances, and was assured that it did.
As expected, an engineer visit was necessary. Even with the exchange being just at the end of the road, what with trotting down there for testing, running a new line from the pole, fitting a new master socket etc., it was about an hour's work or so.
They then stuck £100+ on the first bill that I got here - but when I reminded them of what they had said prior to the move, they did refund it, promptly and without any shilly-shallying.

I would argue, but BT wont talk to anyone about it if its not my gran. Unfortunatly she has health problems, and the move only makes her more tired.

However, I shall ask her at a later date, when she is feeling better. It didnt sound right to me at all.

I will also look for that bit on BT's site, Im sure it will come in handy.
