BT speedtest problems again.

I have been using the BT speedtest webpage for the last couple of weeks as my internet connection speed is dropping very badly during the day. I have had the issue since having FTTC installed a couple of weeks ago. At night the download speed can be as high as 31Mbps (usually 20 to 24Mbps) and during the day as low as 1Mbps (usually 4 to 14Mbps). Upload speed is a solid 8Mbps rarely dropping to 4Mbps. The 3rd part of the speedtest never completes. The webpage just says an error has occured and to try later. I have been trying for a couple of weeks and it never completes the 3rd part of the test. Anyone know if this is normal for this speed test? Thanks.

Hmm well I have had problems like that myself, sometimes the BT test just seems to hang.. then crash and others it will work ok. Have you tried using a different web browser as that may help? Although it probably won't :) .

FTTC is so new that's it's hard to diagnose why something like that may be happening, although there are a few ISP reps on here who might be able to offer some advice. On the surface the fluctation sounds more like some form of Traffic Management. However it could equally be an issue with the "Last Mile" run of VDSL2 over copper.

Thanks, I'll try IE8 from now on to see if it runs it any better than FF 3.6.15. I have had support and complaint tickets open for some time with the ISP who are (so far) silent about the issues. Loss of download speed is consistently occuring during the middle of the day at (I guess) peak times over the last few weeks.

Oh well, just tested again, 3rd test required. Tried using IE8 this time which made no difference, the 3rd test still doesn't work. The page just says "error" in the top pane of the test results page.

BT 3rd speedtest seldom works everyone that has had to try and use it already know. Just take a screenshot of it failing and send that up to your ISP they can use that for evidance at BT's sloppy coding again.

Thanks, indeed, I have never got the 3rd test to work. Not even once and I've been using the speed test regularly since I had FTTC installed a few weeks back.

Sometime back the 3rd test did complete for me, although most of the time it failed. BT's testing system really isn't very good.

Thanks, I agree the BT speed test is rubbish it seems. But it is the only speed test that the ISP asks for.

I think that's because if you have speed issues http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ is the only test that has details on your Infinity profile, which is one of the things that your ISP will want to look at together with stats from the Homehub

I had problems completeing the test using firefox v3.6 but no probs using IE8, but it took several attempts.

If your ISP is BT, best advice I can give is to post your speed issues on BT's Community Care forum in the Infinity section, they have BT staff there that can book you an engineer if they think it's necessary

Thanks, my ISP isn't BT, but when my 12 month contract ends I am seriously thinking of migrating my FTTC connection away from the current ISP to BT. The one thing that puts me off using BT is the thought of dealing with Indian call centres.

I'm told mornings 9am - noon (good chance of getting a UK operator)

afternoons (50% - 50% between a UK operator or an offshore operator)

evenings (always an offshore operator)

don't hold me to that, because to date I've not had to cause to call BT with an Infinity problem, it's just something I read on another forum

Thanks. I think that if over the next 11 months or so the FTTC is reliable, then I might risk a swap to BT as I could reduce my monthly fee by about 40% and get a lot more monthly downlod allowance as well compared to my prsent ISP.
