Bursts of errors sending dlm beserk?

Hello all,

Having been connected 5 weeks ago I was getting 27mb for a couple of days which then fell to 24mb. For the next 3 weeks it hovered between 22-24 which I was happy with given my line length, but in the last 10 days it's gradually slipped down to 17mb.

At the weekend I tried removing the HG612 and plugging straight into my Fritzbox so I could at least see some stats. It seems I'm getting very few errors for hours then a sudden big burst, often when I'm not using it, which is irking the dlm.

I'd much appreciate some advice on what's going on and what I can do about it.

The core status don't look too bad to me, although upstream attenuation might be a little low.

A sudden burst of errors might not cause a problem unless it lasts for a while or causes the line to disconnect, especially if the connection losses are repeated in succession. I can't really tell from the status what the exact situation is and if you're losing connection but it could be a burst of impulse noise, such as from a nearby train or faulty power adapter perhaps, that's entering the copper wire and disrupting your service.

In that case some ISPs are better than others, for example Sky Broadband worked fine for me in my old flat where there was impulse noise from a train (previous ISPs were very unstable) and I think that's largely due to their adoption of G.INP to dynamically reduce the connections Bit Error Rate (makes some lines more stable). The platform you're on now doesn't seem to support that.

But this is just one of many potential problems and I always start by making sure the basics are covered first:

Can you poster just confirm that this is an FTTC service otherwise stats look well out for ADSL?

Would you happen to have been one of the first to connect with FTTC, assuming that's what it is, as soon as the cabinet went live?

Losses of 10Mbps or more have been known to have been caused by crosstalk which becomes more likely as more people take up the service.

I don't know enough about the tech to interpret the graphs to see if they are indicative of crosstalk or what that "looks like", and so defer to Martin's knowledge and experience :)

Yes, FTTC.

DTMark, yep, rather worryingly, I was amongst the first few so it's likely that several more have been added in the last month. If crosstalk really can knock 30% off your performance in a matter of weeks then Vectoring had better work or BT's much vaunted infinity is going to be an uber damp squib. :(

I'm afraid the data we are collecting does seem to show around a 30% drop does happen on noise/busy cabs. My own personal line keeps dropping from 76Mbps to 53Mbps and I have to get BT out to get the profile reset. At around 1000 metres from your cab, which seems to be what the line stats show, you also got sadly too much copper, in my view, that will mess things up still.

What I am not sure is if the Fritz is displaying however is the INP at level 8 (really very bad) or 8ms which would be INP at level 1. I fear though it's level 8 (given the up is level 4). As such you have some sort of wiring problem, likely to be copper side, as the profile has gone into a very high protective mode.
