Hi,

Ive recently had telewest blueyonder cable internet installed. They said the service was 512Kbs download and 128Kbs upload. But the cable modem itself shows (via the web interface @ 192.168.100.1) 512000bps and 128000bps which are the speed caps (I think?). The thing is, this is lower than 512Kbs and 128Kbs since 1K = 1024bits.

512000Kbs/1024 = 500Kb/s (62.5KB/s as opposed to 64KB/s)
128000Kbs/1024 = 125Kb/s (15.625KB/s as opposed to 16KB/s )

Im very happy with the service and I'm not complaining at the speed. I just wondered if many others have had there cable modem set like this or if I'm in the minority. The modem is a WebSTAR DPX100.

Oh and recently Ive been having quite a few problems with the connection dropping. Ive been having to reset the cable modem which usually does the trick (Im in the Barnsley area - S.Yorks). The modem log shows a stream of errors on certain days. Is this usually due to blueyonder trying to upgrade the firmwares on the modems?

Regards,

Steve

its not the wrong speed.

and divide 512 by 8 (8 bits in a byte) and you get 64...

your just getting your technologies confused, and bad maths :D

later edit:

8 bits in a byte.

the download is kilobytes but connection speed is kilobits.

so 64kilobytes download, 512kilobits connection.

as the 1mb service is 1megabit - which is 1024kilobits.

hope this explains better :)

I have Telewest 1mbit service, I get the odd time of my cable modem disconnecting however at times it does reconnects straight after. The only time that is a b*tch for me is when I'm playing an online game with a team but thats another story, but that really doesnt bother me as it doesnt happen that often - on average.

The max I can upload is 28kB/s and download 128kB/s, I've had it ages and I've been well impressed with it, but lately the 28kB/s upload is kinda getting to a point that its just too slow for me as I use a peer2peer program (Direct Connect).
Our neighbouring countries in this world; Sweden Holland, Finland are all getting much faster connections than we Brit's are. A bit of a farce but nothing we can do but play along with what we are given.

sparkatb, the reason the upload speed is limited AFAIK is to stop people using the connection on a server. 128k (Cable) and 256k (ADSL).

shefflad no only BY 750k service is 128k the rest is 256k up
NTLs cable is 128K below the 1mb speed then its 256K

Ah-ha!

Easy answer - computer programmer types deal with bytes (1024 bytes to a kilobyte) us networky types with bits and there are 1000 bits in a kilobit, not 1024!
