May 7 — Cable modems will rule the broadband age — at least for the next five years, according to a research report The Yankee Group released Tuesday. Companies offering cable and DSL (digital subscriber line) service have been competing to convert dial-up users to high-speed services for some time. Satellite companies have also jockeyed for customers, but cable is clearly in the lead, said Imran Khan, author of the report.

DSL TECHNOLOGY will remain in second place due to regulatory hurdles, and other broadband technologies, such as satellite, will lag far behind, according to the report from the from the Boston-based research firm. The report, which summarized statistics on the U.S. residential broadband industry, contained several other predictions on the future of high-speed Internet access.

If the cable companies had the extra cash to expand further then they could give BT a bit of a bashing in the Broadband Market but and this is one of my conspiracy buts, would the government allow this? BT have got away with so much over the years and continue to, why? Maybe becuase they are big employers. Anyway back to reality.

A few of my friends are on ADSL and I have NTL Cable and we have all dont the online tests and my connection came out on top, also my ping on games is lower then theres so maybe cable is better in that way.

It's not just a matter of the Cablecos having the money to widen their roll-out though; they're faced with the same sums as BT are, namely why roll-out to areas that will never (or not for a long time) be profitable. It's no coincidence that BTs and NTL/Telewest's roll-out maps are so similar!

what about the fact that we live in the stoneage here in good old blighty

I can understand the point about not wanting to install in an area that will never make a profit but there are many areas of the country that have a large customer base but no-one wants to take the plunge.
Unfortunately England has always been behind the times and when Blair got into power I thought things would change especially with his pledge that the UK will be at the front off the internet revolution, well I guess we are close to the front I mean only Europe, Asia, US and Brazil are in front of us.
Worse still there are parts on Argentina, a country nearly bankrupt, that are very remote and in order to link the country up broadband or Satellite is being installed there, same with Mexico.

it's hardly surprising that the US has a higher turn out on Broadband via cable, as their cable infrastructure has been around since at least the 70's...but i think that the British telephone technology is more advanced and wide spread, hence the British Broadband route primarily aimed at BT and the telephone companies

If the government want to help bring about 'broadband Britain', why don't they simply nationalise the cable companies and finance expansion with taxpayers' money?

Thats the problem. Blair wants a Broadband Britain but no at the taxpayers expense. Especially with his new spending plan there is no chance of any cash left for broadband. Would be lucky if there is enough left to connect to Freeserves Free Dial Up <img src="graemlins/laugh.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh]" />

If people want a luxury like BB, they should pay for it themselves.
Why should I pay for it for them ?
