Campaign for broadband in Hampshire: Froyle, Bentley, Alton areas

Now that's interesting considering that it was pushed back to 2015 according to the most recent updates.

I am guessing that it refers to the duct between the phone cabinet and where the new VDSL cabinet will go.

Is BT's FTTC roll-out around here in any way going to affect your FTTP plans, Mark?

The only thing it does is makes it extremely difficult to gain any semblance of commercial investment.

If VDSL is deployed to cabinet 3, then that's maybe 40% of the village able to get super-fast speeds.

It then reduces the ROI for a commercial player because serving the other 60% is just not worthwhile. That of course assumes that 100% of the people who want it, who have a choice of both, take a BT based service, rather than the alt-net service, of course the alt-net would be much more performant and so that statement isn't necessarily true.

So while as a stop-gap it means that a certain number of people will be able to get good speeds, it makes the others even more difficult to service.

Hi, Lower Froyle resident here! We've been struggling with slow internet speeds whilst in lockdown and stumbled across this old thread.

We are on the North West side of the village beyond Well Lane. We are currently paying for FTTC (cabinet 3 Bentley) and get speeds of 15mbps. Its ok but still doesn't class as super-fast which apparently is 24mbps or above. When looking at the location of the cabinets it seems most can get a decent speed now and so I fear that because we can technically get fibre we won't be getting any upgrades soon.

I was wondering whether anyone was in a similar situation or found any alternatives / methods of increasing speed? One thing we have looked into is 4g with a high gain directional antenna. https://www.4g-internet.co.uk have said we may be able to get 25mbps this way but won't be able to know reliable speeds until it is installed.

Any thoughts would be really appreciated!

OR Fibre First are in Alton and Basingstoke so hopefully your long term prognosis will be good.

As for 4G you may like to read through this if not already

Coverage maps lie and there is a lot of work going on in the mobile infrastructure. The only way to be certain is yes to test but that can get expensive. From what I can ascertain:

Vodafone coverage good (outdoor) but Band 20
EE coverage good (outdoor) but only Band 3
THREE coverage patchy Band 3
O2 coverage patchy Band 20.

So I personally would start with EE/THREE. Try and borrow (or Pay as You Go) to try both in the Loft. If the signal is as good as the maps show you may not actually need an external antenna. Many on these pages have found that a loft located 4G router with paddles is good enough. I personally favour a 4G router in the loft cabled down to the house network with PoE Injector/Splitters providing power for the 4G. But you will find a host of solutions discussed on this site.

I wouldn't spend a fortune as you will only probably get a moderate speed but no reason why you shouldn't get above 30/15.

If you are considering turnkey providers then I would compare them carefully with current offers from the main mobile providers (upfront, monthly, router quality, mobile provider, locked etc). Many independent Aerial suppliers (TV/Satellite) can offer 4G antenna services if that is an issue.
