Can anyone tell me what this means please?

I'm a bit of a daft one when it comes to all this technical stuff, and I'm currently having issues with my internet speed.

I've contacted AOL who sent out a BT engineer who said there was a problem with my line, so he put me on a new line and said that he was going to raise a job for some work to be done on the exchange and I should get near enough 7mb speeds after that as I live less than a mile away from the exchange. Week later, called AOL for an update as still getting the slow speeds and they said BT had closed the job, but obviously not done the work. They made me do a speedtest using bt speedtester and it came back saying the following:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 3500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 5184 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 3250 kbps

What does it mean when it says that the IP profile for your line is 3500 kbps? I can't get a clear answer from AOL as to what it means and BT refuse to speak to me about it as they say they I have to do everything through AOL.

Thanks in advance

At some point you had synced with the exchange around 4000kbps so the IP profile (bras profile) was set at 3500kbps. If you keep the higher sync for three days BT should auto upfate the profile to a higher level. You are still a long way from 7MB though.

Can you post your router stats so we can see you up and down details SNR etc

The IP profile is the max throughput you will get and your tests seem good but the IP profile is a bit on the low side from the sync rate of just over 5meg, is the router plugged in to the same place as where the BT engineer tried from? also how stable is the connection how often is it disconnecting from the logs? main thing i would need to see is the router stats attenuation/loop loss, SNR margin and sync speeds.

Thanks to you both for your replies.

Here comes the complete techophobe/idiot part...

When you say router stats.. how would I get those, or do you mean something as simple as what router it is?

It's a Netgear DG834G v3 wireless router, and it's got some pretty green lights on the front. That's about my level of technical ability without guidance

I'm not having my internet connection dropped, it's just constantly slow speeds. AOL's advice to fix the IP profile issue is to turn the power off for 20 seconds, every day for a week. I'm just finding it incredibly frustrating that AOL cant properly explain the speed issues, and BT wont talk to me direct, even though they could explain it all to me. Bah humbug to the pair of them :D

Go to 192.168.0.1 username admin password is password unless you have changed it then you want router status o n the left and then click on show satistics and copy and paste the details under ADSL Link.

Thanks.

Which phone socket you on?

This stupid, I mean charming, rented victorian house that I'm in only has 1 phone socket, so it's all plugged into the one and only main socket, which also has one of those booster things fitted on the front by the lovely BT Engineer man.

How many things plugged in to the same socket as it could be causing the capacitance to be higher which will reduce your sync speed.

I've got the wireless router plugged in on the left hand side socket, and on the telephone socket, there's the sky+ box and the phone.

Nothing too exciting going on in my house, so no other flash appliances plugged in

If there a faceplate with a socket behind it have you tried from there? maybe worth while tracing where the cable goes to see if it is the first socket in the house BT some times have fitted them in the attic.

So router to a filter and filter to the master with the SKY STB and phone coming off?

The way to be able to tell for sure is for the filter in the test socket with the router on its own for a true reading then add phones sky etc after and monitor the router stats.

I've got no such luck with this one being hidden away somewhere out of sight like the attic. This one comes into the house right by the front door and there's this lovely looking white box thing at the edge of my inside door frame.

From there, the cable runs directly to the socket, about 2.5 meters away.

Just seen the other tips - have tried taking the Sky out, but still no increase and the highest figure I've had on the IP profile is the 3500kbps, and speed still hasn't increased.

the IP profile isnt the figure to watch out for its the sync speed, do you have a socket that has a split about half way down and you can take the bottom half off? if you do theres a socket behind that, try it from there and post the router stats again.

Just taken it apart, as there is a split down the middle, but when I opened it up, there was no socket behind for me to plug it into. It's just the socket on the front of the booster.

Any chance you could take a photo of it and post it on here or email it to me as i dont know what kind of booster you could have.
