Can I get Fttc?

Hi am looking to move away from sky connect.
When I was searching I noticed my Exchange is FTTC enabled.
Now when I check a number isp's it says
Fibre Broadband Services
Line enabled for Fibre Broadband: Yes
Estimated Maximum Download Speed*: 7.2Mbps
Estimated Maximum Upload Speed*: 0.7Mbps

When I check BT infinity it says not available.

What are the chances of me geting the above speeds? or is FFTC not possable?
My stats for sky connect is

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 928 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63 db 31 db
Noise Margin 9 db 13 db
(it jumps alot from 1.2 to 900)

Exchange: Annaghmore BT Code: NIAE
Location: Richhill Rd BT62 1LX
Distance:- Direct: 3.13 mi
(appx)* By Road: 7.6 mi

Unfortunately, the chances of you getting FTTC are slim to non-existent. The reason being due to the distance you appear to be from the exchange. Now, although FTTC is provided by fiber, it is only fiber to the 'local' cabinet, in which case, yours may be close to 2 miles away according to your stats. If that is the case, then you would be unable to obtain FTTC. However, BT recently changed their policy to allow an FTTC connection above 5 Mbps (used to be only 12 Mbps and above), so you might be able to place an order, however, we have certainly seen a few FTTC orders rejected as the engineer could not gain sync at the customer's premises due ti the street cabinet being over 2 Miles away, and nearly all were showing an obtainable speed similar to your 7-9Mbps.

It may definitely be worth a try getting FTTC, but you will only know once an Openreach engineer has visited your premises and attempted to install.

However, it may be that you can obtain FTTC as the line used to carry your signal along 'the last mile' may be of sufficient quality to sustain the signal, again, this will only ever be found out by placing an order with an FTTC enabled ISP, who will in turn place the order for that service.

Not much to add to what Vispa said above, their information is the correct interpretation. It's clear from your stats that you're a more remote customer and I fear that your options will be very limited. You can get a better insight by reading this news item:

By the way, you can add a review for your Sky Broadband service by going here and clicking to add a new review. Keep it short and to the point :). It also helps if you mention that you're a Sky Connect customer as that service is on a different platform from Sky Unlimited.

I know there is a few cabinets near me by road around 1 mile. (no clue distance by cable)

Guess it's pot luck

What happens if the install fails? Take it I lose the install fee? Also some isp's charge money for the router.

Just it could be a big outlay for something not to work :D

But am very tempted to try

I think some ISP's are doing a free FTTC install at the moment to encourage take up of this (much) more expensive service. The VDSL modem is included. You can use your own router if it supports PPOE (we use our trusty Belkin). I live, I guess, about 1/2 mile from our cabinet and at the present time my download speed varies hugely between 1MBPS and 24MBPS, it is usually about 4 to 8MBPS. The speed consistently gets a lot slower during the day. Upload speed is a solid 8MBPS. I have the ISP looking at this for us since a local BT engineer tells us houses very local to us typically get around 30MBPS. My experience of FTTC so far has been quite iffy, I hope to be able to identify soon if it is my ISP or BT who are causing the problem.

I found out where my cab is.
It's 1mile by road.
It is one of the new fttc cabs going by the pictures. Longer than the normal ones.

To jump in here, I found speaking to an ISP who has access to a proper BT TAG checker helped identify what service was available. Not sure if the TAG checker is a standard thing but it appears to be more correct than comparision websites. Defo do the homework on the FTTC before spending the cash up front.

Hope I help!

If you aren't too bothered about the higher prices than it can be worthwhile taking this issue up with fully independent ISPs like Zen Internet and AAISP, which both have customer support staff that actually know techy stuff and can take a proper look for you.

Update!!!

Bt openreach eng is away .

I was told 7.2mb I now have 14mb!!!!! Over the moon
Thought I was going to be stuck on 1mb for ever

Just got home from work :)

Think that proved the point, distance dont mean a lot!
I had a higher attn of 75db against op 63db and 5.6km from exchange running 70,s aluminium cabling, but my FTTC cab is around 200 yards away.

More of a problem with the setup and requirements, not many in the know even a BT installer as in you need a fibre router. There was two in front of him with ethernet inputs ready to go using one now.

You only need a router that can do PPPoE with a wan2 turn it into a bridge disable the ADSL, if you are not sharing the FTTC connection and only have 1 computer just set the pc to dial in on PPPoE use ethernet direct from BT's live modem to the PC.

BT installers are somewhat behind on learning about FTTC only a few have been trained the rest learn on the job.

How true. The BT installer hadn't a clue what to do when our FTTC installation didn't work. The BT bloke didn't know how to get it working using our trusty Belkin router with their VDSL modem. He just said "I normally plug it together and it works". We asked him about connecting the VDSL modem directly to the PC without the router, he said it couldn't be done. The man simply was not equipped to do his job, not at all. Then he left the house leaving behind a non functioning FTTC installation.

Doesn't BT's new Home Hub 3 router now include the VDSL1/2 modem inside?

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/story/20...omehub-3-broadband-smart-wireless-router.html

Which is handy only if you are going with BT but FTTC is a BTopenreach product I have heard not a BTworld on so slightly different.

Any PPPoE router will work as long as it has a second Wan port on back for ethernet or is a router for cable which is ethernet connection.

Many wish to avoid internet from BT after recent history I for one wouldn't use BT internet as sooner or later they will do another trick like Phorm on the customers with no notice to the customer they are being spied on.

Couldnt agree more BT pushing FTTC big time stating only available with them. To my knowledge theres 15 other providers as is.

I did have a right game getting mine up and running, VDSL direct to pc wouldnt have it neither would a Netgear 3700, BT Hub2 or TPLink1043 all with ethernet inputs. All tried with the bt-test@startup-....... login to no avail.

BT call out failing to arrive for two days along with implications of waiting in all day both days = no work. Just to satisfy myself and will get charged, "we just install a Hub 3 set password and login, job done". "Never seen one like this before separate VDSL modem, you need a fibre router didnt ISP give you one?" "Why didnt you go with BT?" graciously told him 3 major set backs by using them.
Of course he left with it unworking.
The Hub 2 has inbuilt ADSL modem and you get in to the advanced parts though i would expect the admin to be unique since mine is a local area name followed by 2011. 192.168.1.254

Theoretically the current three ethernet input based routers i have and one i took back should work, but loathed to have more head banging sessions. If it wasnt for the Dlink DIR855 showing online whilst pc network showed no internet connection might have slung it out the window. It would be interesting if anyone else has had similar trouble connecting, LAN and WAN always worked and showed working!.
Upon initial connection it must have took 5 mins searching servers etc before a page opened.

Speedwise not what the initial BT installer said was a stable 39.1meg anytime of the day. Anything from 7 to 20.5meg down dependant upon time of the day so will be having words with ISP.

My experience of having FTTC installed by BT on behalf of a 3rd party ISP using my own Belkin PPoE router was also traumatic, not helped by the ISP in my opinion, being less than helpful. A few months into my FTTC contract I can say that it is more reliable than my wet string ADSL connection but the download speed is highly variable depending on time of day. It can be anything between 32 and 8 mb/sec. I expect that as the FTTC traffic increases, the typical download speed will go slowly downwards too.

Quite happy now logged a fault with ISP Monday, BT were looking in to it. Was down to sub 1meg speeds on two tests reminiscent of ADSL up to now, some of us have had it rough for so long.
Now greeted in peak period just after 6pm with

It just gets better and better.
