Can I use a VPN on Aquiss internet?

woof

Casual Member
I have recently moved to Aquiss. I have discovered that my usual VPN settings are not working with Aquiss.
Can anyone think why that is?
My VPN provider shows that all is ok, so before I dig deeper, is there a known reason?

Who is your VPN provider? What method do you connect with? OpenVPN? Wireguard? L2TP? I've not used Aquiss but in theory they shouldn't but I know that Now broadband does block NordVPN for some reason.

VPN provider is 'Private Internet Access'. OpenVPN. I have now solved the problem.
For a number of years with my previous internet provider, I used DHCP and some assigned IP addresses for various gadgets.
I changed the settings for just DHCP, and now it is working fine.

I am going to dabble with WireGuard soon, as I understand that internet speeds are much better. Is that true and is WireGuard safe to use?

Wireguard is fine to use yep. It's built into the linux kernel now and there is an official wireguard app for android/ios as well as windows/linux/mac software. Many commercial providers do use it. It has lower overhead than openvpn does (faster throughput on some lower spec devices/routers etc)

I will be using it on my router. Asus GT-AX11000 using Asuswrt-Merlin firmware.

It all depends what you want VPN for. If it is for hiding your IP address, activity and data for business or other purposes, no ISP should be preventing you from doing that via an established VPN provider. If you want to tunnel through to a UK IP address from abroad, for the purpose of accessing UK-based broadcasts such as BBC Iplayer, then it is easier to set up your own VPN server if your router has that facility. I use my RT-AX11000 with Asuswrt-Merlin firmware, to do that.

Well, strangely, I fixed the issue by changing to using DHCP. For many years, I have used a mixture of assigned IP's and DHCP. It has always worked fine, until joining Aquiss.

I would be interested in seeing how to do this. :(

What protocol and port were you using?

I was just using my VPN script which I previously uploaded to my router. I made no alterations to it, so have no idea.
To be honest, I probably don't need to know as I am in the UK and not currently planning any foreign travel.

Firstly, you need a router with the facility to set up a VPN server. The RT-AX1100, for example, allows your server to be OpenVPN, PPTP, IPSec VPN and Wireguard VPN. For the purposes of tunneling from abroad from a standard Windows client or Android, PPTP will do, but a MAC will demand the security that comes with IPSec. My router's help facility guided me through the set up for server and client. It isn't simple for IPSec, so I can't set it all out here.
