Can someone explain in plain english

This is my first post here and I hope this is correct forum

My forum was taken offine yesterday by Patrick interent. I emailed them to ask why and received the following message:

"I've been looking into what's happened here and have detected that your hosting package (knowingabout.co.uk) is running a permanent server process. This is against our terms and conditions and may affect the web servers performance. Scripting has been automatically disabled on this package, but FTP remains enabled. Please remove the permanent server process and let us know so we can reactivate scripting. "

I have asked what is a permanent server process and what could cause it as I have no idea. They havent yet explained

I had uploaded a package for onine wysiwig editor and also addchat a webpage.
I have deleted both but still not sure if I have done the right thing. I was taken off line a 1.00pm yesterday and still not online yet.

any help or advice please.

Computer programs run as "processes" or "tasks". Your host is suggesting that you are constantly running a program ("process"/"task" on top of basic web page requests) that could use up CPU time and degrade the host's web server. HTH. :hrmph:

Thx for prompt reply but still baffled, could you give me an example of the types of things/scripts/programs that could cause this?. I have html containing javascript pages on my site and a YABB (perl message board).

personally it would be interesting to find out what the task in question is, however l would like to make a stab in the dark.

does the forum use MYSQL databases?
if so is the script set up to use persistent connections?

other than that l personally dont know what to suggest unless you were wrongly picked as the culprit. (l myself run a dedicated server and see mostly mysql seems to use allot of the servers processing power, equally the sites l help run are 10,000+ members)

Permanent server processes are generally things like 'Shell Scripts' that run in real-time and can be used to manage bots (chat robots) on an IRC channel or other similar things. Timeless is also correct in that some hosts may mistake forum software with 'persistent connections' (e.g. vBulletin) enabled for something similar, though I think vB disables this by default now. Only big sites with need for load balancing generally have a persistent database (MySQL etc.) connection.

Even with a dedicated server and telnet/ssh access it can be difficult to pin down precisely which process connects to which script or online application, plus on a big site it will be hard to tell the difference between a permanent server process and a temporary one as there could be a lot of repeat processes that may look like they are permanent when in fact they’re not.

In this situation I would try to get as much information from your host as possible and recommend using the phone because email is too slow and won’t allow you to apply pressure for an answer ;) .

I don't know what "addchat a webpage" is but most web-based chat systems are actually batch processes, so they are not perm and may only appear to be so. However it is possible that some chat systems might indeed be percieved as a perm process.

generally with vb the setting is usually in the config file with regards to connections with a setting of pretty much 0 ir 1
