Cancelling v21 -What are my options?-

After 7 months of uninterrupted service with V21, I'm needing to close my account due to the fact that I am leaving the country in 3 days time. Today I arranged to have my BT phoneline switched off on Wednesday, and followed the directions on the v21 website, hence faxing a letter to their offices requesting a cancellation of my account (pending a 28 day wait period!).

Looking further into the problem, I see that there is no way to leave v21. These "gangsters" will continue to deduct payment from my credit card on a reoccurring basis. I've called my credit card company, whose only advice was to have the charges disputed after they've been debited. Considering the fact that this could go on for a long time, I'm not sure if thats a good option.

The biggest problem right now is that I am returning permenantly to my country of origin in a few days time, and will not be able to follow up anything from there in regards to legal action, nor will I have the option of officially declining any "free tickets if you stick with V21 'offers' " as I will be moving addresses. Furthermore, as my BT phoneline will be permenantly disconnected, will they be able to continue charging me for a service which does not exist?

Given the current situation, what are my options in preventing this potential reoccurring "robbery"?

Send a copy of the fax canceling to your credit card payments to V21. From then on its a case you have tried to do this the correct way I should go away and if need be change your bank if you close teh account they take the funds from they cannot take any.

this is a tough one as v21 will for sure keep taking money from your credit card.

only thing you can do is make sure you get a response to your fax, make it for the attention of the company directors, just cause a stir and if they have any ounce of human decency, they should let you off without penalties.

Another thing i can think of is to change your bank details, but make it one that you are about to shut down. But this is a bit over the top and doubt it would work.

You need to stop this , otherwise the recurring payments for a service which does not exist will potentially go on forever, as i think thier billing system is on the same league as thier customer service, which leads me on to my next question, where has that v21 rep gone?

Closing a bank account is not always effective.

When you cancel give V21 your new address and tell them to send their future correspondence to that address :)

I was going to suggest Once you have paid all legitimate amounts V21 are due, If you write to V21 informing them that you withdraw your authority to debit your credit card (Do NOT include the number) and keep a copy, In the event of further debits, the bank should regard them as unauthorized (fraudulent). But V21 might use this as an excuse to charge you £80!

But if I recall correctly, you could ask your bank to issue an new card on the grounds that you have reason to believe the card's number has been compromised by being obtained by an untrustworthy indivisual, or else report it stolen (not while you still need to use it though!)

I can provide a JPeg of the 'Free flight crap' slip if you like you would need to use an art package to insert you account ID number and name as shown below or try to type out a good facimille I guess, and don't forget to sign it of course. Might be worth a shot, but may not work.

(this is limited downloads so anyone who doesn't need it leave well alone - I've removed our details)

I do not wish to benefit from any of the offers available and wish to continue with the closure
of my account.

Fall out if you are in a monthly contract then the account will be cancelled upon receipt of the letter and returned slip however if you let me know your ID number i can look into this and ensure we have received this.

v21 support, as if it wasnt obvious. he is on an annual contract.

How gracious of you to let someone cancel a week early on his monthly contract. you are indeed too kind.

No, I am on a monthly contract. I have fufilled my portion of the contract without fault. Unfortunately, as I'm moving outside the country in a few days, I won't be availible to recieve and return your "slip of paper".

My customer ID is 128877, you recieved my cancellation fax yesterday at 4:46 PM according to my log. I am mailing a copy of this log, along with the attached fax, directly to my credit card company to avoid the possibility of any future hassle.

Please assist. I have enjoyed quality service with v21 up until this point. Although I will dispute and rebuke any unauthorized transactions on my credit account during the 28 day period which are outside the normal billing cycle, and any attempted transaction on this account following that period will be, according to the words of the bank representative whom I spoke with last night, turned over the financial crimes division of the U.S. Secret Service.

Thank you for your assistance.

Fallout
I have already spoken to the cancellation team about this and sorted this the account is now schedlude for cluse for, whihc does however include the 28 day notivce periods so will not cease on our system until the 15th August, even though i know you will not be able to use this. We have had to take a part payment for the 28 day notice period but you will not be charged after today.
I hope this helps

v21,

Thank you for your support. I've just recieved notification for a deduction of GBP 18.33 as of 12:17 today. Though I wish that no further action will be required by either of our parties, I have copied the contents of this discussion thread to be included in my next correspondence with the forementioned financial institution. Once again, thank you for your effort in resolving this matter in a timely manner.

this is good news, i think v21 support needs to be congratulated.

Certainly not. Unless seen to make an effort for Mel and the poster in the other thread, I see no cause for back slapping. Indeed, we dont even know if this problem is sorted, as another payment may be taken yet. Certainly that happened in Mel's case.

Specifically Mel's problem, as he has been as clear and concise as you could hope for. There should be no reason why his problem cannot be sorted, unless V21 are breaking the law.

I understand the rep cannot comment on legal matters, but there hasnt been so much as a 'Ill' look into it'.

As they say a picture paints a thousand words!

I want to cancel V21 dialup next month so I can move onto broadband and since Ive seen there have been problems what action should I take? I want to have the next month worth of dialup so I have a backup connection incase the broadband decides not to work.

Well,as i've advised everyone i signed up i would wait for the payment to go out then ring the bank and cancel your card. I wouldn't trust V21 at all,and that comes from experience!! I hope you haven't signed up for V21 BB.........
