Cell mapping applications - discussion

I've noticed on Cellmapper that, with a couple of exceptions, all of the O2 5g towers that were previously green have reverted to red. They remain red even if I re-connect to them with cellmapper running. Anyone know why ?

Seems to be a serverside update to fix the eNBs and cell IDs. They divided the eNBs by 4 and didn't autopin the fixed eNBs to the old ones' locations. You'll have to re-locate them. It's all UK networks except Three that got updated

Is it me or Cellmapper doesn't seem to pick up 2G BSICs (for O2 at least)???

Doesn't show up at all in connected cells and on sites I've mapped, the BSIC always displays as 0.

2G cell on NetMonster, shows BSIC of 6

2G cell on Cellmapper, no BSIC

Took a closer inspection and it looks like it shows like that on all recently updated 2G cells around here. Wonder how long it's been an issue as it looks fine pre-2022.

Hopefully I am not taking this topic off at a tangent, however quick question if i may. When I use the CellMapper website I see hardly any 5G cell sites (even zooming out to the whole country shows very little). Yet, when selecting 4G there's thousands. Is this because 5G cell sites have not been mapped as yet, or could I be making a school boy error?

Hi Gary333,

Cellmapper will only show 5G Standalone when you select 5G in the filter.

5G Non Standalone still uses the 4G signal, that's why Cellmapper won't show any 5G unless you specifically select 5G, then it'll only show you the 5G Standalone masts.

The above grab shows O2's 5G SA in Glasgow when you use the filter. :)

Have I made it as clear as mud now? :giggle:

Ah! All makes sense now. I doubt there will be any standalone where I live, so understandable why no cells. Just checked and it looks like Manchester is the closest (about 60 miles away).

Yes 5G SA is still not widely available outwith cities. :)

seems like someone else has had a wander around nearby here a day or so ago, another SA mast has popped up (and out of curiosity it turns out I can get N28 SA indoors a little easier now if I lock to NR only, it still isn't enough to run a test)

Made sense to me :)

If that's the case how do we identify the 4g towers that also serve 5g? Thanks :)

Click on the tower and in the tower info panel if will say '5G ENDC Available - Yes'. It doesn't show on 4g only sites but if available you'll see it inbetween 'Last Seen' and 'Type'.

That indicator rarely shows up honestly, there's multiple sites on all networks where that doesn't display. I'd cross-compare with coverage maps and see if sites have a wiki entry saying whether they broadcast 5G or have ENDC support (I'm doing that with my O2 listings lately).

+1. It's not a reliable indicator.

EN-DC only means that the site is capable of acting as a 4G anchor for NSA 5G, not that 5G actually is available from that site (however, with some networks it often is)

Yes, see https://www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/threads/cell-mapping-applications-discussion.40980/post-388009

Since that post Three has also been amended.

No further amendments should be required so sites can be relocated without worrying about work being undone.
Thanks, I read it but clearly forgot about it 🤦‍♂️

Had to locate some previously located sites on Vodafone (interestingly, some sectors popped up though), but it means more might show up here now if someone's here with a compatible device and SIM (I'd work on SA listings but can't with a Pixel 6 Pro currently).

What's going on when Cellmapper shows two of the same tower? This evening it says I was connected to the red low confidence version, not the green one…

It's because they have different region codes. I don't really keep up to date with 2G, but quite possible they moved from one base station controller to another which caused the change of region.

Yeah, 2G sites in my area are either on 25xx (standard 4G TAC) or 23xx (which hasn't been used on 4G for years here afaik) for EE. Edit: apparently it was 1056x actually according to OpenCellID

O2 has done this also with having to remap a lot of sites that was on the xxx91 LAC (one site seems to remain on it and I haven't got a clue why that's the case, although it has 5MHz B1 4G 😂) now being on the xxx85 LAC, but haven't noticed it on Vodafone.

I don't really bother mapping 2G on EE, too confusing. Same for Vodafone, at least O2 usually makes 2G and 3G simple to map.

There's been some Vodafone upgrade work taking place in this area and another red mast has popped up - There's nothing in this cell site location so location is wrong. Does it get fixed automatically or do users on this Forum carry out some updates?
