CF faulty router and no wifi for the past week.

hello everyone, so last Sunday my internet port on the router stopped working and CF said they would send out a new router. They got back to me saying that the warehouse is having stock issues and now I have not had any internet since the 30th Sept.

I’ve called every single day to get an update but they keep saying they will escalate to admin team, but getting no results.

I’m not sure what to do now, I’m thinking of switch to Virgin as they have the next high speed for an isp in my area. Is it worth going back and fourth with CF or just cancel my CF and go to Virgin instead?

Are you sure it's the router? Do you have any other routers to test with? Any third party router will work with CF. In fact you could even connect a PC or laptop directly to the ONT and it should give you the public IP to the device connected. Although I highly recommend don't run it like that as you could be hacked if your device has vulnerabilities.

So currently having a Ethernet from the modem to laptop/desktop works. But when the tech person over the phone from CF told us to plug the Ethernet from the modem to the internet port in the router, it didn’t work. Unfortunately I have no router at the moment, currently see the same one CF provides on Amazon but it’s £184 which I don’t really want to spend just because they have stock issues.

Check ads on Facebook Marketplace for local wifi routers. I set a radious of 1km and several wifi routers for £5 and one even for free. And these will be local to you which if the seller responds you can pick up now.

While it is unacceptable for CF to not have stock of routers to post to you as soon as the problem has been pinpointed I would also think people need to take more responsability for their critical infrastructure. Both me and my wife work from home so for us internet connectivity is critical hence why we have a backup internet connection and multiple wifi routers. While that might be an overkill for most people I think having a spare wifi router should be a very basic thing specially with an ISP like CF which does not restrict the use of third party routers and the fact that second hand equipment is effectevely free if you look around for bargains.

Again not trying to excuse CF here but you can make apositive from a negative. You could claim you had no service so you could ask CF for a refund for the period their router wasn't working. If you combine that with a free Facebook Marketplace used router you will end up with savings in your bank account. I would not go back to VM and the cheapest no contract plan is a rip off: £43 a month for 54Mb.

I came from BT but BT only had one package which I believe was only 40mb max.

We get all the packages up until Gig1 in our area with VM.

I just ordered the linksys one you linked so I’ll see if it works as it says it will arrive today at 8PM.

Yes. There is a small chance you might need to call CF to reset the Mac address cache. And you will need to connect to a new Wifi network in your wifi devices. But that should be easy.
Would the MAC address need to be reset by the tech team as I believe they don’t work on weekends?

I don't know who does the reset but worst case you are up and running Monday morning. Also if the router supports MAC cloning on the WAN port you can clone your laptop/desktop MAC address which you already said works directly to the ONT.

I just checked the Linksys MR9000 manual and it does support MAC cloning (see Advanced Settings => Internet Settings => Additional Settings). Do note this is an old Wifi 5 router sold by a third party seller so it's NOT going to break any records but it will get you by for now. If you can wait I would buy a Linksys Velop AX4200 on eBay or Facebook Marketplace (which should match what you got) so that when CF sends you a new router you can use both of them in a Wifi Mesh system and have great WiFi somewhere else in the house where 1 Linksys Velop wasn't good enough previously.

Personally I would try CEX.

Most likely they will have one in stock in a shop near you, if it doesn't work they are good at taking stuff back.

There are cheaper options but for a case like this they would be my choice.

It should still give me around my package mb right which is 500mb?

yeah the problem with CF is that if something goes wrong with the equipment you are without internet for weeks! They gave you a date 32+ days later!!! I called a million times...
