change of package

I contacted my ISP with a view to changing the package that I am on to prepare for a move to FTTC when my cab is activated.

Well I got a mild shock, just to move from a LLU to a BT based package would cost me £138 on my present line and phone number but get a new line and BT package it would cost £120 and there are no spare lines on my DP.

It gets worse, when FTTC becomes available there is another £96 to pay for that. Adding it all up it's £234 for the complete move to FTTC, that's not including monthly costs and line rental.

May be this is one of the reasons that there is such a slow up take of FTTC plus the time you lose your internet connection during the change over period.

I will just have to stick with what I have now unless I come up on the lottery!!!

wasnt that much for me, yes there was a connection fee of £60 but from there on it was just normal monthly payments. as for downtime l was offline for about an hour (tho l may have been lucky). l guess some ISPs have different policies or there are other issues that need to be addressed.

Depends on the ISP, although if it's an internal move between different platforms but with the same ISP still then that is extremely expensive. Ironically that probably makes it cheaper to change ISP entirely, especially as many other have free FTTC activation and migration offers.

£120 for a new line?? That must be BT; BTOR charge the ISPs £60, and some small ISPs just pass on that cost without adding their own charges (profits) to you - (Aquiss).

Also keep an eye out for promotions, I JUST missed out on free fibre install when I switched earlier this year.

So unless you want to keep your old phone number, have a new ISP install a new line and have fibre installed on that, then cancel the old line and ADSL service when the new line is up and running.

also worth noting that sites like topcashback work, while l did have a £60 connection fee, essentially once the cashback offer had gone through the system it pretty much meant that l had the first month free along with the connection fee, only reason it took longer for me to claim was because my first order failed because services on my line and it took some extra time to sort that out.

Hi All,

Been a little busy this week and have not had time to say thanks for the replies.

The only solution I have come up with and the cheapest is to go back to my previous ISP. I am still giving it some thought before I finally make a move.

Cheers Paul.
