Changing ISP

Hey guys, I'm from Manchester (if that makes any difference) and I'm looking at switching my ISP/upgrading my connection.

Currently with Virgin Medi-ocre. They're ***** and give me problems but should I go for:

A ) Go from 10mb to 50mb VM connection that will probably get capped to all hell and basically be a 50mb connection that gets capped 80% if I even try to use it at all because their "Fair Usage" policy is about as fair as the big kids beating up the fat kid in the playground.

OR

B ) Be* Broadband 24mb connection that apparently doesn't get capped ever and from all the reviews I've read say are incredibly stable and good ISP that gives very good d/l and u/l speeds.

What are your opinions on this, could really do with a fresh set of opinions.

Main difference between the two..

A) You should be able to achieve 50Mb with Virgin at times, if there is no congestion regardless of where you are (as long as you are covered by their network footprint, which it seems you are :) )

B) Be's offering is ADSL 2+. This depends on the distance from the exchange. The further you are away, you'll see less of the "up to 24Mb", as you'd like.

You *should* see a good speed at that distance.. but remember, the cable will be routed around roads/streets and might be much longer.

Quality of the line also plays a bit part in the speed you will get. If you know any neighbours who have Be (or any other ADSL2+ 24Mb service), it might be worth asking what speeds they get as this will be a good indicator of what you are likely to get.

Worth noting that Virgin Media has not yet put a strict Traffic Management policy onto its 50Mbps package, though they might add one in the future when it becomes more popular; so for now you don't really have to worry about an FUP. As for BE, they're very good and should give you an estimate of your expected speed before you signup.

In any case both options are good, it just depends how much you want to spend and whether the faster speed that VM's 50Mbps will get you is worth it.

what is the upload speed on a 50mb VM fibre optic?

Speedtest Result.

This is my current connection with VM, keeping in mind this is full on SPECTACULAR in comparison to what I usually get as I'm usually capped 90% of the time but there's not been anything to download this weekend so I'm currently uncapped. Usually it's more like 2.3mb/s Down and 0.05mb/s UP.

Thanks.

Last time I checked the 50Mbps upload speed on VM was 1.5Mbps.

Hi Fishman

If you goto www.smithmediagroup.co.uk/check.php and put your number in there it will tell you if you can get the Cable and wireless LLU package (other suppliers do this as well) however if you cant get it there is a special BT unlimited offer in there.
Give me a shout if you need any help.

Cheers
