Hi all,

Im currently with Virgin broadband and have been for the past 2 years, i live with my mother and am leaving shortly but she wants to keep up with broadband connection, she does not however want to stay with virgin (as they have been throttling my download speeds for a while now).

She would like to sign up with Be Broadband, i have requested my MAC code from Virgin which i now have, is she able to swap the service to Be using my virgin Mac code? is it linked to the phone number or my name??

Also, the email from Virgin states that my account will be cancelled once i provide my new ISP with the MAC code, but Be state that if you sign up it can take up to 2 weeks, will she be without broadband for 2 weeks??

I hope someone can help and look forward to hearing any replies,

Cheers

SP

The OFCOM code on using a MAC means she can transfer to new ISP using a MAC without any downtime. VM cannot cancel the account until they are told by BT that the migration to BE is completed. You can check on OFCOM and recheck with VM about this sometimes they try giving information that is slightly misleading to make customers not change.

Hi

Thanks for your fast reply,

The email that i received from them was trying to scare me im sure of it, felt a bit put out by it to be honest,

So my mum can order Be with my MAC, is it just the phone line that it is connected to (the phone is in her name with BT anyway),

I have added part of their email:

"Your Virgin Media Broadband account will not be cancelled until you have
given your MAC to another service provider, so if you change your mind
and would like to stay simply do not use your MAC.

If you decide to use your MAC and leave Virgin Media Broadband, you will
lose your Virgin email address immediately. The day you request your MAC
code will also be the start of your 30 days notice period. Any
cancellation charges will also be collected"

I have asked them how much the cancellation charges are but have had no reply as i need to make sure i have enough in my account to pay for them,

was you out of contract with them?
If so there should be none as long as you pay the month regarddless of the date you leave. But always wise to read the T&C on their website.

hi

I was on a monthly contract with them, that was the main reason I signed up with them

Then as long as this month is paid there should be none but with all larger companies you can never be sure even BT try it on when someone leaves. Keep all proof so you can always prove you are right.

I believe with virgin, a cancellation fee applied if you left within the first year (to cover the cost of BT's adsl activation fee), but as you've been with them over a year, there should just be the notice period to pay - some ISPs charge the next monthly payment if the notice period ends after the next payment date, but I wouldn't know about Virgin.

The MAC will be fine since the phone line is registered in your mum's name.

If your mum plans on joining BE she can probably get a cashback through www.quidco.com (search for bethere).

changing isp

I was with sky I asked for and was given a mac code to change isp, I gave the mac code to plusnet my new isp as I was advised to do, I am now paying for two lots of broadband as sky say they did not recieve the automated email to inform them of the migration and plusnet say that it was sent, I have to pay for both until the fourteen days notice is up with sky, this doesnt include the ten days between me knowing of this problem and giving them supposed compulsory notice, not as straight forward as I was told and unfortunately Im the losing one.

Uh - uh

When you request a mac code, your current provider has to NOTE that you are terminating your ISP, thats why it was set up, so Sky just ripped you off

Plus

Cancel the direct debit, most require this these days, then they have to send you a bill, which you can then question and refuse to pay as you had informed them you were leaving.

I'm currently with Nildram who appear to be taking an age to send me a mac code. What is so difficult about giving a customer a mac code? Are they worked out by some mystic sat in the background? Surely it doesn't take 5 days.

I'm leaving them because they said they'd sent me 4 letters saying my acc wasn't up to date and informed me of their new partnership with opal. 1 letter I can understand going missing in the post but... 5!!! no way. they say the sent emails to my email inbox that they provide... empty!!! How did I find this out... a phone call from a debt collector with no warning!!

Can anyone throw any light on why it takes so long to get a MAC code ?

MAC Code

Have the same problem with Tesco/Virgin. Have been with Tesco for years but package is now out of date & overpriced & cannot get a better one from them, £17 for 512k ADSL. Even this only works at 402k on average. Have waited 2 weeks now for my MAC from Virgin, anyone got suggestions for ISP's? Only have copper wire & standard exchange i.e. non LLU.

Call Virgin and firmly, but not rudely, quote them Ofcom's official rule on the issuance of migration codes; if you can then record the conversation because we'd love to know why they are delaying it and that always adds a bit of extra pressure too.

As for ISP suggestions, Zen, Fast.co.uk, IDNet, ICUK and Xilo tend to be good/top for quality. Otherwise you might have to check out PlusNet for a cheaper if not as cheerful service.

I got the court papers ready and served with virgin when I was with them because they refused to give a refund, it was only then that they backed down.
I honestly don't know how Virgin have anyone on their books. As far as I can see they are the worst of the lot. They're good at taking money but not very good at offering a good service.
