That’s crazy cheap considering what it is… I wonder how cheap it’ll ultimately get

£2410 for "high performance" version.

Got the same email last night. At first I actually thought it was a crafty phishing attempt.

Im seriously considering this now..
The equipment price is great, but I could never justify the monthly price for the speeds you get.

Fine if you're in the middle of nowhere and can't get a mobile signal and have deep pockets I guess. :giggle:

For sure. But it’s a a dead easy option for many in such circumstances - a £600 annual premium over a bog £25 monthly broadband charge.

For folks working or running a business from home that really need decent connectivity that’s a rounding error on the accounts.

As much as I’d push 4/5g as a solution as the first alternative to fixed line service - you could eat up that premium getting someone up a ladder to fit an external antenna and let’s face it fudge about trying to get that stable and good mobile service in many rural places. vs order this - get it delivered in a few days, pretty much unpack it and all good to go.

Another arrow in the armoury.

That's exactly the use case.

There's no way they could provide it at a price comparable to FTTP: they'd be swamped with orders and not enough bandwidth to go around. Think of it like a PON network, where everyone in the same cell is on the same splitter.

Having said that: £75/month isn't that much more than people are prepared to pay for FTTP (typical £55/month for gigabit), although a fairer comparison would be 160/30 which can be had for under £40.

There is a hidden cost though, which is power. I gather it's something like 75W (or double that for the high performance version). 75W, at 35p per unit, adds another £19 per month.

It's definitely another nail in the coffin of FTTPoD though. Anyone who pays £9K today for FTTPoD, and is lucky enough to get 5 years use before native FTTP comes along, is paying effectively £150 per month on top of their service subscription.

New smaller dish due soon. if they dropped the price on the roaming option to £50 a month I'd go for it, you can pause it on a monthly basis, only pay when you need it.

They dropped the monthly price in France to 50 euros 6 months ago for the unprioritized service.

I think they will struggle for uptake in the UK due to our cheap cellular coverage for most people..

They won't "struggle" for uptake - they've priced it to get just the amount of uptake they want.

This is not a mass-market service, and they especially don't want high take-up in densely populated areas.

The population density of France is nearly 2.5 times less than that of the UK.

I want to get the RV version. To go on my imaginary RV (dammit, motorhome), which I will own one day. When I win the lottery.

I wonder if they are phasing out the circular ones for the square ones
The original circular ones haven’t been available since the current rectangular ones have been on sale.

There was no similar discount on the circular ones when the rectangular units came out.
