Cheapest 5G modem/router?

Looks like my only option here is the HUAWEI 5G CPE Pro 1/2 routers?

We don't have 5G at my house or workshop but there is a mast put in by Three within range. They won't tell me when it is getting turned on and I can't order 5G "broadband" via them as we are not in a service area. That and I already have SMARTY SIMs and apparently, some people are getting 5G on SMARTY so would like to test that with the masts that are up and running in the city.

I am due to get 300mbps BT FTTH next month but for £45 a month.
Three is £30 a month for 5G unlimited so as long as the latency is not above 20-30ms I am down for using 5G over FTTH. If I can test 5G at another site and it is decent, ill cancel BT.

So far the cheapest I have found the H122-370-3 routers to be around £200-230 on the second-hand market.
Is anyone able to confirm that is the cheapest way to get the router?

I am not a cheap scape, though this thread might make me look like one. Just want to shop around and get the best deal xD

You can order Three 5G Home Broadband by entering a postcode that can receive 5G (e.g. NW1 4PT) - you just put your actual address details in after the initial availability check. You will get a Huawei H112-370 5G hub with the contract. Their home broadband contracts currently have a 6 months half price offer.

Ah great. I will double-check with them about returns within 14 days so if it is bad here, I am not locked in for 12 months.

Do the IPv4 change a lot?
Presume it is also shared?

Passionate as we are about 5G tech, @jackster22 I must admit that my honest advice at this time is ... if you can foot the bill, stay with the FTTP!

It will be a significantly more stable and usable connection than 5G. You'll be at the whim of backhaul issues, users overload, perhaps weather and so on.

My suggestion is to take BT on, see how it goes in the first year, try to get some discounts after that. Probably prices will drop as competition in your area increases.

If you go 5G route, you'd be paying £300 (at least) on a good router, then £25-35/m for the service.. already this is more than BT FTTP.

Also, there is a chance Three will work well for 14 days, or 28 days and so on and then as more users join the network (5G handsets getting cheaper) you'll be fighting over backhaul and spectrum with them. Or some fault develops and they'll be dragging their feet to fix it, as it has been the case many times..

Congestion is another concern of mine.

BT on my new housing development is hardly used as they took a year to enable the service so VM got in and took all the customers.

Three has a deal on atm that makes the 12-month plan £320 and the 24-month plan £630
BT FTTC on 24 month is £1,020

Three sales just confirmed at I can get the 5G hub and test for 14 days. Though if I used a lot of data they will charge me for the data.

I think you'd have to use a whole lot of data (many TBs) for them to charge you, AFAIK there is no FUP, don't worry about that unless you're a massive data hoarder. :)

The decision is yours.

I am currently paying £28 for EE unlimited 5G and it's great considering, but if BT came knocking at my door with FTTP for £45 I'd sign up in a blink of an eye.

Even at 300/50mbps? Worth it for the extra £15?

Yes, because I know I'll always get that speed, the latency will be super low and nobody is going to check my traffic usage (EE have an FUP). Also I'll get a public IP, not CGNAT, that I can visit from "outside", to check my CCTV or my Nextcloud installation and so on. Also, I won't have to share any spectrum or backhaul with anyone else, as BT's network is pretty good.

Speed-wise that is very good for me, it's basically what I get with EE nowadays.

On Three I get a ping of 50m/s, when FTTP comes to me next year I will be dropping Three despite dropping the ADSL landline 2 years ago. 4G works well but FTTP is just better.

Wouldn't it be better to get a Three SIM from somewhere like affordable mobiles, and pay £7.50 (as part of their cashback deal) a month as opposed to the Three £30 a month price?

You can buy a separate open market 5G CPE Pro which may have more features available that Three lock down on their carrier devices. I'm not sure what kind of down payment Three ask for on their 5G MBB service but maybe it will end up cheaper to not go direct with Three?
