Checking BT's network status?

When trying to diagnose a network problem, eg slow speeds/latency, as many of with fast4 were last night and may be still this morning - do you know of links to BT's own network status pages which would be relevant to us as non direct BT broadband customers?

ie. Eurisp say the fault lies with a BT central down... so where would i be able to see that info?

What i found searching was this:

http://www.btbroadbandoffice.com/bu...click&oLName=link.searchresults&oLDesc=KB_127

which does report a "network problem" which is unspecified. Im not sure if this is the problem we are having or something else. Maybe im looking in entirely the wrong place? This is for office broadband. Maybe there is crossover, but not always i guess. So anywhere to see the 'big picture' as it were, of BT network status? Any advice would be appreciated cheers.

i cant help you with the network status, but what I can suggest is the following:

Whilst connected to your ISP, goto http://speedtester.bt.com
enter your tel number that your service is on
enter your logon details
get the results

If they seem slow, then do the same but instead of being logged on to your ISP, get your router to logon using the username speedtest@speedtest_domain. Password can be anything.

Then see if that makes a difference.

I have a feeling the site Pistoleer linked to may only related to BT Business Retail and not its wholesale division. I've got links to a lot of technical pages but I'm not sure whether an overall service log for all wholesale supplied ISP's exists, it may be that such information is only issued privately to providers.

Cheers guys. I think you may be right there Mark. In which case i guess it would be up to our ISP's (or their suppliers) to give us access to such status pages.

When talking to fast4 re issues, it seems that they themselves do not have access to such info though, as they seem to need to talk to Eurisp first..

When living in Australia, i found there to be better transparency of network bandwidths etc with ISP's being willing to show just how much bandwidth they had bought and the usage levels of the pipes. In addition the ISP would provide links to charts showing the suppliers network status. This takes an honest and open ISP however.

If we had this then last night we would have easily seen that capacity was reached and overflooded and thus saved us having to work out what was going on.

from yesterday:-

problem in the Osgathorpe area 01530

I live about 2 miles from there and i'm sure there are no businesses in that area, only fields, farms and sheep oh and some grass.

Some of us do provide this information to our customers, see http://noc.enta.net scroll down to the bottom right of the page. it lists all 6 centrals and their expected speeds and saturation. Also look at http://noc.enta.net/?page_id=166 this shows the overal capacity and utalization.

Excellent to hear and see that thanks!
There is also an opportunity to subscribe to email notifications as well..

I hope more and indeed all ISP's take a leaf out of your company's book in this regard of network speeds and saturation transparency. Cheers :D

There is also the very useful enta tool that you can use, if you are with any of the enta resellers.

http://www.entatool.co.uk/

Shows the status of up to 6 centrals in both the main window, and in the system tray
- Alerts user when they status of their central changes
- Identifies which central you are currently on, as well as the gateway name
- Can be loaded with windows
- Informs users of how much they are likely to be charged (including breach charges)
- Measures current speed, while ignoring local network traffic (unlike other b/w monitors)
- Support for multiple lines from within the same enta billing account

- Shows current speed history as a graph, and tally's today's usage (not available elsewhere)
- Graph can be separated to its own window, where its translucency can be set
- Graph distinguishes between total (black), download (red), and upload (yellow).
- Graph colours are configurable, and can be given a margin

- Shows accumulated monthly usage in percentage bars
- Identifies your offpeak limit from your peak plan
- Shows this months usage in system tray
- Identifies your next billing date, and the number of days remaining until it
- Calculates how much peak/offpeak you have remaining, and how much this amounts to per day remaining

Usage report:
- Shows days left until billing date, with how much bandwidth has been consumed thus far
- Totals the bandwidth used and displays how much is remaining
- Calculates your average usage per day
- Calculates how much you have left per remaining offpeak (weekends) and peak day.
- Predicts how much bandwidth you are likely to have consumed by your billing date
- Percent bars show how much bandwidth you've used per day, and how this has effected your total

Central report:
- Shows performance of each central on a graph
- Shows which central you are on
- Displays the central performance and centrals load over the past 24 hours
