China Unicom VN007+ Review

Same here only n78 to test with.

Added my poynting directional into the mix too. Here' some signal stats

View attachment 2422

Not sure why it's giving me -10dB one one of the bands (4G I think?) because the stats are 4G / 5G IIRC. Anyway I actually don't know for 100% certain which antennae port is for what so i'll be doing some experiments I guess.
Just thinking from future proof, will be very useful once 5G SA kicks in :D

So I'm ready to do the antenna mod, however, the aerial alignment on the antenna PCB's and on the actual motherboard are very different to the VN007.

DabigM did highlight this in his GitHub blog, but i'm still struggling to find the following on the VN007+ :

4G - Main
4G - Diversity
5G - NSA Main
5G - NSA Diversity

Any ideas here gents?

Many thanks,
Anees

I haven't figured this out myself either. Yet. I have a rough idea and i've put my guesses into the github page. Mine is a VN007+ btw. I have never actually seen a VN007 except on youtube.

I think the 5G main is PCB 4 or ports ANT3 and ANT6.

My hope is to update the github page with the correct answers, or if someone else wants to please do.

I think you might have cracked it, as you write in the blog..."Antenna (external) Hack: Use ANT1, ANT6, ANT2, ANT3. Leave all the others connected to PCB antennas...."

I now believe the following:
ANT1 = 5G NSA Main
ANT2 = 5G NSA Diversity

Both have the same cable colour = blue

ANT6 = 4G Main
ANT3 = 4G Diversity

Both have the same cable colour = white

I also think that ANT5 and ANT4 are for 5G SA and are coloured black

However, like you, I don't know what ANT7 is used for?

The Unicom android app is kind of dumb.
Instead of _asking_ the IP of the router, it tries to be "smart" and autodetect it as the phone's default gateway...
Mine is now set in "bridge mode" in front of my Linux router. Oh well, at least the UI presents all the same options anyway.

I think the WiFi ports are labelled. 2.4G-1/2.4G-2 and 5G-1/5G-2.
The rest are just ANT1-ANT2-etc.
Ok, so this router is 4x4 MIMO (I hope!), this means it needs 4 antennas for 4G and 4 for 5G - of course there may be more than one antenna in 1 PCB blades. I reckon there are multiple cables coming out of some PCBs?
I'm yet to open mine up, so it's just guesswork from my part, boys, sorry.

PCB4 does. It has what I think are a 5G as in mobile network antenna, two white cables coming off it. It appears to be cross polarised, as in if you look at the back of the PCB it has antenna covering the areas the other side does not. It also has a red wire on it which would seem to be 5GHz wifi (red wires go to ports 5G-1 and 5G-2) -- annoying why can't they call it 5GHz in stead of "5G".

This would lead me to believe that PCB4 is the 5G "main" antenna.

PCB8 goes to port 5G-2 so that's 5GHz wifi and we can ignore that.
PCB6 has two wires coming off of it. A grey one going to 2.4G-1 and also a blue one going to ANT-2. I'm not really sure what this ANT-2 one is.
PCB2 goes to 2.4G-2 so that's WiFi and we can ignore that too.

This leaves PCBs 1,3,5,7 to figure out. The antennas in the PCB on 3 and 7 are identical.

At this point we can also work something out from the cable colours themselves.

5GHz WiFi = red cable
2.4GHz WiFi = grey cable

This leaves White/Blue/Black/Light Grey

I'm certain white =5G.

So this now leaves Blue/Black/Light Grey.

On the VN007 it looks like

Blue = 4G. Black = 5G DIV.

Yeah fun stuff.

Looks simple enough to me dabigm, dunno what all the fuss is about. :rolleyes:

@dabigm this is a fantastic router.
I followed the steps you documented and I'm well chuffed with the results. It's a tad slower than the Huawei CPE Win, but I'll forgive it that, it's so configurable.

One thing to note, this thing is calling home, you might want to disable TR-069, see attached. This might impact updates though, needs more tests.

I just noticed your menu looks different to mine. What software version do you have ? I'm on 1.10.17

Has anyone done a step by step guide on how to put ext sma adapters on the VN007+? i do fancy buying one to mod.

I looked at this video clip. From 4:40 onwards, he says what the ANT's are:

I asked a guy who mods in the philipines and this was the reply:

1 and 2 = 4G
3 and 6 = 5G Main
4 and 5 = 5G Div

(He means the "ANT-x" ports on the board)

Sorry for the questions - did it come with a UK power supply or UK adaptor?
Yes, you can choose a "colour", us, UK or eu.
If you buy it, go through Topcashback for 5% off.

Hmm, interesting. SO that means only 5G has MIMO?

I saw some Youtube videos (Mr Ramos?) where he says that the VN007 has separate antennas for the NSA and SA 5G.

Perhaps for the VN007+, Unicom combined the NSA and SA all into the same antennas.
