CityFibre has been building for over a year!

Hi,

I have been with TalkTalk on OR 900mbps for a long time (2+ years) and I absolutely enjoy that service. However, my use case requires a much higher upload speed than the meager 105mbps available on OR and I have been patiently waiting for an AltNet to show up.

In November 2022, CF showed up in our street and the wider local area (south Warrington) and started their build. They seemed to be using many of OR underground ducts and infrastructure which I thought would speed things up. Their vans and personnel started to disappear around April/May 2023 which again I interpreted as they will go live very soon. My contract with TT ran out in May 2023 and I have not signed for another contract whilst waiting for CF to go live, which means I have been overpaying for many months now (£49).

I got in touch with CF but with no success, they basically said they will let me know when they go live.

I understand that no one here can predict when CF will offer their services to me, but surely many other people have been in a similar situation and I'm seeking advice. I'm wondering if I can sign up with TT or Vodafone on OR and when CF goes lives, can I ask them to switch me to CF to exploit the higher upload speed? Has anyone done anything like this? Thanks a lot.

I probably wouldn't bother trying with TalkTalk or Vodafone just because their customer support is likely not going to go the extra mile for you, not to say you shouldn't try if you can muster up the motivation to go through their call centre hah. You might be able to contact some of the smaller city fibre ISPs with known good customer support and see if they can give you a better time line as I think they do have access to more internal timelines. That said timelines change so it might not be accurate. If you know of any near by postcodes that do have CityFibre(check https://bidb.uk/) you could check their ISP list on the CityFibre website and see if you can find any promising ones to speak to. Some of the smaller ISPs do offer OR and CF too, so you might have better luck with your plan with them too.

They aren't that quick after they've done the road works though. We had CityFibre people around the area from late 22 as well, they disappeared around January time I think. Cityfibre wasn't orderable until September.

FibreNation built in my street around the start of lockdown in early 2020 and it was summer 2023 before I was able to order a service from CityFibre, who took them over. It's a lottery as to when you'll see active services available to order - a build in your street may mean it's imminent or it might just be the first step in a multi-year process, I wouldn't hold your breath.

I had the opposite issue.... CF was live in my area, but the only ISP to offer it, wouldn't give me it! I had to go with Virgin, when I really wanted Vodafone 900mbps, a bit cheaper than Virgin's M500 package (higher upload speed was needed)

I for several months had no ISPs at all, but then when they finally connected, them is a fair few.

I can tell you in my location Vodafone is there from from the initial unlock, but talktalk isnt listed, however that doesnt mean it will be the same for you, I have had people tell me it varies by the area which ISPs are initially available,

Whether these providers would let you switch wholesale supplier penalty free I dont know either, thats all going to depend on their internal processes. AAISP very likely will but of course they have their premium.
