CityFibre is live! Who to choose!

I’m getting CF via Yayzi on Wednesday…£35 a month for 900/900. 1 month contract seems like a great deal to me, I am a little worried about the install as I have VM at the moment which is neat and tidy, but since CF can’t use VMs existing ducts, it may be messy, but we shall see on Wednesday

Either way, it’s good bye VM, hopefully for good, as I’m paying £40 a month for 500/50… I needed the higher upload speed for cloud backups

So I'm live now with IDNet. Getting 940/930 (thereabouts) - the guy tested the fibre connection itself to be very strong light wise. I'm not a stickler for top whack speed as long as quality is good and we're in the 800's.

Latency - getting 4ms via the Google speed test, and 5 - 6ms via the Ookla test. I'm yet to do some pinging of my own but this is already as good as I'd have liked. So IDNet is all good (London to Leicester).

Also they've reduced their pricing from £48 inc VAT p/m to £45 now. And they're still honouring that with me going forward even though I signed up a few weeks ago @ £48.

Install wise, they've done a drag from the telegraph pole. I'm not too happy with the side-house install as I wanted it directly into my attic (bungalow) AND I feel they could have gone higher with where it joins to my house. And they've had to wire it down to near ground into the brown box, then back up the wall into the attic. They wouldn't install the brown box high under the soffit which would have made sense and cut out 2 unsightly wires going down the wall unnecessarily. However I'm going to ahem, take care of this myself - all of this is vanity stuff - absolutely minor. I just wanted the connection live and now it is, it's open season! They left plenty of rolled up slack on the line coming from the pole so I can climb up on my roof and take it a touch higher.

ISP wise though I think everything is going to be good with IDNet. Tomorrow I go on-site so I'll see how good it feels to hook in back home via VPN and access my resources at better speed. I'll be VPN'ing in back home now as stock routine going forward.

Hi all, new to the forum, I am in Leicster (Wigston) and my contract with Sky is coming to an end, I was looking at Vodafone, but reading the forums I am thinking about IDNet and Yayzi, only issue is, I have a landline phone that my wife still wants to keep.

Yayzi do not provide a phone service and IDNet are charging £139.99 to take a number over and £6 extra per month on their 900/900 plan making it £46 per month.

Any recommendations or suggestions on how I can get round paying for taking the line over, is it cheaper if I take the line back to BT ?

Thanks

Look at porting your number onto a dedicated VoIP only service like Andrews and Arnold or Voipfone - both have VoIP only solutions for just a few £ a month.

If you want to do this, assuming your sky existing service is FTTC

1. Order your fttp service with no voice and get that up and running.
2. Do a trial of one or more VoIP services to see which suits your needs using a temporary number. You can for example have your landline on a softclient on your mobile if you don't need a physical phone any more.
3. Then arrange to port your existing landline phone number into the VoIP service - when the port goes through this usually terminates all the associated services associated with the phone/broadband.

So it works something like this, you have the FEX you connected to, and that has connectivity going out of it to connect to ISPs.

There is CityFibre National, which includes the smaller players like AAISP, IDNet, Yayzi etc.
Then you have the likes of Zen, TalkTalk and Vodafone who utilise their own backhaul connectivity. I assume when Sky start selling CF next year, they will also use their own backhaul, so these become available if and when they connect themselves up directly.

Who is available first seems to vary from location to location, for me, I had no one at all for several months, the status was "we are done but waiting for ISPs", but then the first ISPs that appeared were Vodafone alongside all the CityFibre national ISPs. Zen took quite a while to appear, many months, and TalkTalk remains unavailable.

For me when ISPs were connected they appeared on CityFibre's own checker in the list.

There "which ISP" questions for some reason seem hugely popular on CityFibre.

I am personally on AAISP, but you have already ruled that out as you cost sensitive.

My general recommendation to people is one of AAISP, Aquiss, IDNet, and if all those are too expensive then go with Yayzi. Yayzi I would say are the best of the new guys, they did away with CGNAT a while ago, they are also active on social media, and even have a support forum.

I have opted for IDNet, they are currently the best reviewed here on this site, my existing connection to Sky is not FTTC, I can only get 80Mb.

I have a digital voice to the property, IDNet can provide the phone line, If I opt for the 24 month contract they will supply the router that has the voIP hardware for additional £6 per month and the £139.99 becomes £19.99 to move number over, Yayzi do not have the ability to do the voIP.

Unfortunately I cant use my own Router if I want the voIP. But I will most likely use my own WiFi router for better range etc.

Zen can also provide the same for £46 per month, free to move the number but IDNet are much better in terms of user reviews.

Just need to put the order through and judging by the reviews hopefully trouble free service for the next 2 years on 900/900.

An alternative could be one of these VoIP DECT Base like the Gigaset N300a. Im using this with my No One Internet line and with the operator Sipgate. Not sure if they do number portering.
