clean instal of xp but...

doing a clean instal tomorrow, i have done it many times but i have a different setup now so need some advise.

i have a sata drive will that make any difference??

also i want a 100% clena instal so i need to format, i dont have a floppy drive is there any other way i can do it?

HH,

You can boot off the XP CD and format the hard drive from the installation program.

What SATA Controller have you got the drive plugged into. XP comes with a fair number of drivers on the CD for hard disk controllers but its worth checking that yours is on there, or you will have to do either find a floppy drive with the driver on or recompile the XP installation CD.

well it shows it as a 2001 windows driver and also the controller is run from a windows driver so hopefully it will work.

hopefully it will work, i dont have a windows xp disk, i have this disk from dell that says OPERATION SYSTEM which does have xp on and a few other bits.

well tomorrow im free and i have burnt all i need onto disk so hopefully i will have a trouble free day tomorrow

thanks

Your best bet would be finding out what motherboard you got in there, and going to the makers website. Its almost certain they will have the sata driver Turnkey was on about.

I dont know if the dell setup stuff will have the driver on it, as Im not sure how old your dell is. It also depends on if the motherboard has one on already.

In short, if you dont have it on a floppy disk and its not one recognised by windows, you cant install XP.

Note: Its HAS to be on a floppy disk, it wont accept it from a cd etc. This is immensly stupid, but thats how it is.

dell is now around 7 months old, thing is dell have there own mobos.

i have been to there site etc put my tag in abd browsed the drivers, there isnt one for my maxtor sata drive.

i am going to give it a bang tomorrow and hope for the best if not, i have got 3 yrs next day call out so will use that if need be. :d

Hmm, thats why I like building my own system.

You dont need a driver for the hard disk itself, just the controller.

Does the sata cable plug into the motherboard or a seperate card?

I think as a rule Dell PC's shouldn't need a SATA driver, I have installed XP on loads of Dell systems with no problems.

You can but you would need to mess about with the XP CD a bit and manually add the drivers and add a few lines to the txtsetup.sif. Its what I had to for my pc.

HH-> in Device Manager look under SCSI and RAID Controllers and see if your SATA controller is listed under there.

into another seperate card if i remember properly, havnt opened since i installed my 6800 ultra :D.

on the other hand i have been having a look at dells support forums, it can be done by a little work around on the bios, turing it to just plain ata, installing xp then changing it back to sata.

well tomorrow will hopefully provide me with some entertainment.

If its a sata drive being used as the install drive, and the driver isnt inc in the windows lot, then you HAVE to have one to install XP (or 2003 as I found out today).

Turnkey, Im sure you can, but thats really not worth the hassle compared to just putting the drivers on a floppy, unless you dont have a floppy drive.

I cant see how that workaround would work.

I assume the card came with the dell when you got it? If so, there must have been a disk with it, or a cd with the drivers to put on a disk.

Remember, you only need to bugger about with all this if your install drive is the sata one. If your installing to an ata drive, you can install the sata controller drivers later.

its the case of Press "F6" on install and insert Manufacturers Floppy Disk for Driver, Mine was on a damn CD so I had to copy it to the damn Floppy before it would take it :(

(SIL Driver For a Gigabyte GA 7n400 Pro 2 and XP Pro)

yeha do have it installed, i am a bit lost now on what to do

does this help any more? looks like its the intel drivers.

I cant actually see any sata drivers on your system from that.

One thing you could do, is open it up and have a look at the card the sata cables plug into. It should have some sort of model number on it.

But I dont see why you have sata. If you havent bought a sata card, and didnt get a sata drive with the dell, I cant see why they would include one.

If you get the model number and make, post it up, and I will have a go at getting drivers for you.

I did not have to do anything special to install XP on a recently built system with 2 SATA drives.

Drives connected via a small (red) cable to the SATA sockets on the mobo, booted from the XP CD and installed.

Do you actually need "special" drivers? My device Manager does not show anything specific to SATA. (I'm not running a RAID configuration).

Hmm, then your only hope is finding out the motherboard make and model.

tbh I think it will be in the XP lot of drivers. The trouble is, if its not and you dont have a driver disk, your screwed. Its ok for the people that have spare computers, but if you dont, then your stuck with a computer without windows until you get the driver disk.

from what i have found out, you shouldnt need any specific dsrivers unless you plan to run a RAID. if not you should be fine, just change the bios.

well as soon as ive back up, i will attempt it. If im not back online today you know the reason :D
