Collecting new pc tomorrow - which O/S please

Good evening,

I've been out of the gadgets and what's what with pc's for some time now and after 6 years my antiquated pc is dying :(

Money is tight but I needed to get another pc, so tomorrow I'm picking up a budget system c/o CCL Computers:
This is the pc

As the desktop has no O/S what do I need to run it? I have versions of XP pro and even Vista but will this system need 64bit software to work?

All help is appreciated.

Thanks
Richard :)

It should come with drivers for 32-bit Vista and XP, maybe Vista 64-bit as well. Any modern system should run Vista (32-bit version) without problems, you don't need 64-bit software. :)

P.S. How's the motorcycling going ? :)

Going very well that Bob. I bought the Gixer 600 three months ago. It looks the business and sounds superb. The performance is outstanding.

Just trying to slow down a bit and ride so I see things whilst on it rather than everything being a blur :)

Just on a personal note... I find Vista 64 bit nicer than 32 bit. Hard to explain other than it just seems that bit smoother in operation. Have a converted server I run as a media centre PC and it much prefers 64 bit, also 2 notebooks I have worked on lately seem to perform much better on 64 bit. Unless you have some old game or legacy software that just won't run I'd go 64 bit. Home Premium, Business or Ultimate.

Well I tried Vista and was then told that there's nothing but problems with it, so ditched it for XP Pro SP2.

The screen is very nice and the pc works well..........except I had to buy a £20 graphics card so I had tv out. Now I cant get the tv out to work properly. When I clone the monitor to the tv, I see a kinda flash image on the tv screen but then darkness on the tv.

Now the S-video lead that came with the g.card seems to be a little different to the one I had already.

Anyone got any ideas to sort this please?

Cheers
Richard

Bob, I wanted a basic g/card with tv out - it's a Geforce 8400 GS.

The thing is, if the lead was wrong I wouldn't see anything on the tv would I, even if it's just a quick flash?

Eureka!

Bad connection on the video mono phono lead. Now I'm embarrassed.

Anyway, I'm glad I posted - this is still the best site to seek help and it's great to see some of my old ispreview buddies are still posting.

Big thanks to Bob for your many helpful posts :

I appreciate all your comments :)

xp is a way to go just find a COA sticker on any old_no_longer_used pc and use it. if it doesn't get activated call MS. works all the time ;-)
