Combined VDSL Router/modems that can be flashed?

Combined FTTC Router that can be flashed?

Hi All,
I was wondering if there were any recommendations for combined Routers/Modems for a new FTTC install I'm getting when I move shortly (with Co-op (thephonecoop)).
Specifically I was hoping for something that supported Tomato (probably Shibby?) or (worst case) DD-WRT (OpenWRT sounds a bit too hardcore for me), but none of them seem to be supported.

I've seen this site's two excellent reviews:

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.ph...ons-uk-fttc-isps-integrated-vdsl-modem.html/2

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.ph...dband-router-options-uk-fttc-vdsl-isps.html/2

Note: My networking fu is relatively weak, and I've not actually used any of those firmwares before, but wanted to for a long time.
Thanks

The only context in which I can speak is that of the routers that I have had, and we have never had VDSL, and haven't had ADSL for 6 years, we use 4G.

With an Asus router, specifically the N66U which won't work for you as it isn't VDSL capable (I think). However the three antennae give a good wi-fi performance on this model (nb it is not the same model that Mark reviewed) and it's all in English, nicely thought out, works well, performs well, and unlike some of the TP-Link and D-Link stuff we've had - it's still working a year on.

Personally I wouldn't recommend using a combined modem/router on FTTC, I would find out what equipment is in the cab and get a matching openreach modem for the best results, if you play around with the parameters and not know exactly what you are doing you can and likely will do more harm than good.

Thanks for the responses.

So I'll dump the modem component.

Any suggested router that can handle Tomato? Ideally in the sub £100 price bracket and low power usage.

I see that the ASUS RT-N66U does, but is expensive, and draws up to 30W apparently (~£40 per year in electricity). Something closer to <10w is desired.
Suggestions welcome.
Thanks

Personally I'm quite partial to the TP-LINK TD-W9980 (N600) for the money, although not everybody is a fan and it helps if you don't mind the old style of techy friendly setting pages. But you'll probably want to ensure that the latest firmware is added to it before making full use:

http://uk.tp-link.com/support/download/?model=TD-W9980&version=V1

I think it gobbles about 18 Watts, although that assumes you're using everything at the same time.. inefficiently.

Maybe we should look at the power draw of routers in a future article, although the problem is that the impact of different settings makes this very difficult to pin down.
