Community Fibre CGNat

A refreshingly good response to CGNAT complaints. I hope other providers take note. CGNAT may be unavoidable for the number of customers a provider has but allowing a customer to move to non-CGNAT on request is a really good solution.

Hopefully it will be left as an unofficial route to a public IP. I'm sure there won't be a signifigant amount of people needing it anyway.

I put a call into CF this morning, the initial tech support rep wasn't too helpful and basically said all i can do is put you through to cancellations. I spoke with the cancellations and they have a dedicated team for CGNAT / Dynamic IP issues.

A few hours pass and i get an email from CF confirming they've moved me onto a Dynamic IP and my VPN is up and running again! Happy to report i'll be staying with CF and not switching back to VM.
Did you say anything in particular to get them to switch you to a dynamic IP? I’ve been with them nearly a month now and only just realised the CGNAT situation..🤦‍♂️Wanted to make sure they aren’t only doing this for longer term customers.

CGNAT is an abomination. I feel sorry for anyone stuck behind it.
The price we pay for the regulatory failure of ipv4 and slow adoption of ipv6.
Not much we can do about the first, but I guess authorities could push a bit for the latter.

There is an argument that its unfair that the older bigger ISPs have huge amounts of IPv4 obtained for free, and newer ISPs have to buy them on the open market.

If the larger ISPs had to give up some IPv4 gif the new entrants, it would help with IPv6 adoption too

Just ditch v4, it's the simple solution. v6 is the way to go.
Whilst I love the sentiment - much of the web is lagging far behind adoption of IPv6 at this time

AWS are emailing their users about IPv4 charges now ($3.75/month), which seems to be a sure-fire way for cloud services to adopt IPv6 and push as much traffic that way as possible.

I just told them i had a requirement to remote into my home network, I said it was available with Virgin Media and and would need to switch back if they couldnt enable dynamic IP for me.

You'll still be in the 60day satisfaction guarantee so you can put a bit of pressure on them but they didnt really argue at all, just enabled it.

Thanks for your response!
I called and spoke to customer services, they put me through to tech support who said if I wanted to remove CGNAT I would have to upgrade to the 3Gb plan.
I tried again a couple of days later with the cancellation department who put me through to someone else, opened a ticket and got it removed(y)
Worth noting I did not get a “real” public IP in the Linksys app until I completely powered off the ONT and router, restarting the network via the app did not seem to work.

Just joined Community Fibre 1Gb service and have requested a change to Dynamic IP - am awaiting their confirmation.
Does anyone know how to see what the WAN IP is set to on my Linksys SPNMX55 router - I cannot see it anywhere when remotely accessing the router. All I see is the internal lan IP address.
Of course if I am connected locally I can use MyIP to see my external address - but I am told that if CGNAT is in use there would be a difference between what the router shows as the WAN IP and what I get from browsing to MyIP.

@Gussie any luck? Wondered if you might be able to provide an update as to how it went. Thanks.
